Obama Pushing Jobs For Unemployed Military Veterans

JULIE PACE   08/ 5/11 03:47 PM ET   AP

WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama on Friday proposed tax credits and training programs to help thousands of U.S. service members returning from war in Iraq and Afghanistan find jobs in the shaky economy at home.

The president announced his proposals just hours after a new report showed the nationwide unemployment rate is still over 9 percent.

For some military veterans, the economic outlook is even more dismal. The White House said 1 million military veterans are unemployed. Among those who joined the military after the Sept. 11 attacks, the unemployment rate was 13.3 percent as of June.

The president said many of those veterans bring skills from the wars that can be applied in the civilian workforce.

"If you can save a life in Afghanistan, you can save a life in an ambulance in Wyoming. If you can oversee millions of dollars of assets in Iraq, you can help a business balance its books here at home," Obama said during remarks at the Washington Navy Yard, a former shipyard that now houses Navy administrative offices.

The president's proposals were part of his efforts to return to a focus on jobs after spending weeks mired in the contentious debt-limit debate.

"My singular focus is the American people. Getting the unemployed back on the job, lifting their wages," he said.

Obama challenged Congress to get to work right after its August recess on legislation to extend for another year an expiring tax break on Social Security payroll taxes, to further extend unemployment insurance and a program for "putting construction workers back to work rebuilding America."

The tax credits Obama proposed for companies that hire veterans would also require congressional approval.

He asked Congress to authorize a "Returning Heroes" credit for 2012-2013 that would give companies that hire unemployed veterans up to a $2,400 tax credit. It would increase to $4,800 if the veteran has been unemployed for six months or more.

Obama also called for an extension of the "Wounded Warriors" tax credit, which gives companies that hire veterans with service-related disabilities a $4,800 credit. If the veteran has been unemployed for six months or more, the credit increases to $9,600.

The administration said the tax credits would cost the government about $120 million.

The president challenged private companies to hire or train 100,000 veterans or their spouses by the end of 2013. The White House said several companies, including Lockheed Martin, Microsoft and Siemans, had already committed to that effort.

The president also announced a joint initiative between the Defense and Veterans Affairs departments to come up with a "reverse boot camp" program that would help train service members for the transition to the civilian work force as they wind down their time in the military.

Adm. Mike Mullen, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, joined Obama at Friday's event, and said the country owed veterans more than yellow ribbons and parades when they come home.

"What our troops need when they come home is more than yellow ribbons, parades and an open heart. They need an open hand. And one of the best ways to extend that hand, to truly honor a veteran, is to hire one," Mullen said.

Why doesn't somebody propose something to help the Vietnam era veterans, many of whom are among the over-55 long-term unemployed? It's nice to think that all of the Vietnam era vets are retired and living comfortably, but that isn't true for many for various reasons.

We have 21,500,000 veterans in the "civilian noninstitutional population" and almost half of them (10,400,000) are veterans of Vietnam, WWII, or the Korea war eras. Yes, many are retired, particularly the WWII and Korean war vets, but the youngest Vietnam vets are in their mid to late 50's. Many of them came back to a country that despised them, that blamed the veterans for the war, and many suffered psychologically and/or physically for years.

I've known too many Vietnam vets over the years who have struggled with employment, with health or psychological issues, and who, after finally getting things together, found themselves tossed out of work at early ages. It's gotten worse, of course, with this recession.

31 americans died in afghanistan today. 31 souls that will never kiss their loved ones, or see their children grow up. Yet the bickering on this board from the right and left is exactly how both political parties, and to a lesser extent the media profits.

This is why Veterans are hungry and homeless. We blast politicians, or cheer them on (depends on your party) for what they say, not accomplish. This Obama tax credit for hiring Veterans will not put a dent in Veterans unemployment. Perhaps Obama does not know this, but his advisors should have told him.

Unfortuneately because their are not enough former Enlisted Veterans at the top levels of Government (this has gone on since Nixon), Politicians and the beauracrats (the V.A. as I wrote before is notoriously incompetent).

Where else can you hire a foreign Doctor that is not qualified at a city, or county hospital? Yep, the V.A. These folks are clueless as to what Veterans need to be re-integrated into society. This should not be a right or left issue, .

Not enough people know Veterans to show real; not fake outrage, to make a real difference in Veterans lives.

The 31 souls that died today will be remembered by their family and other Veterans; The rest of america will go back to reality t.v. sports, and fake political outrage. I was once proud to be an american,,,,

Here's a thought Mr President. How about you DON'T give amnesty to the millions of illegals. How about you set stricter immigration policies and hold people accountable for breaking our laws. Send them all back and make them come here the LEGAL way! We'll find plenty of work for the Americans that WANT to work.

Do you realize how much money it would take to "round them up and send them back"? In this time of constant budget cuts, where is that money going to come from? All agencies are going to have to be cutting back, and this will include the immigration services and various police and patrol services. I'm not saying whether or not this is something that should be done, only that it seems unlikely that any more resources are going to be allocated towards immigration or border issues.

The VA already provides most of these services and this proposal is a total waste of time and effort. It's really shady of obama and his Regime to come up with this sort of gimmick to push his campaign efforts. What needs to be done is to give the VA more funding to expand their current programs and not waste money on another obama boondoggle.

According to a veteran who posted here, the VA is fairly inefficient or possibly incompetent. It is not shady by any strain of the imagination to help those who have put their lives on the line for YOU. We have unfortunately become a country who's prime belief is 'whats in it for me'. That time I say shall pass very soon.

Yes, $1000 tax credit if the Veteran was unemployed after coming back from the war, Veteran must work at company for 1 year afterward.

Obama was going to recind it maybe they will keep it going. Since it is only for "evil corporations" his handlers may talk him into dropping it.

Which reminds me I have to fill out that paperwork for that, thanks!

And one user living in Traverse City, hours from Grand Rapids but within driving distance, offered Scott a place to stay to get him off of the streets. “I think it would be better for someone(my son) to pick him up than have him travel alone by bus- he is too vulnerable at this point for the trip alone. We are already rearranging our dining area so we can make him a make shift room of his own so he will have some kind of privacy. My hubby is hoping he likes to fish cause that will give him a new fishing partner!” she wrote.

“For all offering to help pay for this I will get back with you if we need any help with gas money but I think we have enough gas in our van to make the trip I am 126 miles away and I get really good mileage and a couple of my kids are willing to help with money if we need it.”

These people are true Americans..willing to help a neighbor ...unlike the tpublicans who offer only harsh judgement of all and misery.

Rapidly, they pieced identifying details together: Scott, male, 45, estranged. They knew he lived in Grand Rapids, Mich., where the unemployment rate is 11.1 percent. They knew that he posted from a library somewhere in Grand Rapids. They knew he was suicidal, but still reaching out. They knew they had to help him.

Users started calling all of the libraries in Grand Rapids in real time, asking the workers to go find him. Another called the Grand Rapids Police Department’s non-emergency line, providing them with all of the information about Scott and his known whereabouts. Another called the Michigan suicide prevention office. Along with the librarians and the police, they managed to get Scott, still suicidal, to a hospital for urgently needed medical care.

Dear Patriot86:
You mentioned a facebook or some kind of exchange for the unemployed in a previous post, which I scrubbed by mistake. Will you please provide it again? Some of us are still in a position to help. Thanks in advance.

Bush and the GOP including the debt crisis tpublicans have cause so much pain...I wept when I read this.

The stories appear in letters to Congress as well. “My dad, S, killed himself March 16, 2009 because he ran out of money and could not find work. My whole family had been devastated by the economy. He was 61 years old and could not take it anymore. He could not figure out how to keep the electric on, buy food, or keep a roof over his head. A day before his electric was to be shut off, and 2 weeks away from eviction, my dad took the hardest walk of his life. He left a note on the dining room table for my sister and I. His suicide letter said ‘I love you. I had to do this. I ran out of money. I wish you both luck in your lives’. He left the door unlocked with the door key left in the lock. He carefully laid out two suits for us to pick from to bury him in,” one person from Forest Hills, N.Y., wrote to Rep. Anthony Weiner (D). “I almost caught my dad in time, maybe another 10 minutes and I could have saved him.”

While I want all to have jobs...I don't think it is fair for the president to do this...there are many who are unemployed and all need jobs...no more tax cuts.
10:46 AM on 08/06/2011
We need to send money to those who need it and would spend it. Let's extend the payroll-tax holiday. Let's extend unemployment insurance. Let's listen to Paul Krugman. Our people need jobs. But jobs are the last thing the Republicans want, and they control the House.
10:12 AM on 08/06/2011
So, Barack thinks "things will get better" and "we are going to get through this".....total disaster. He must be due to hit the Vineyard with the family in the next week or so..hopefully, he will enjoy the vacation and can just go on doing what he does best.....nothing positive. This guy and his handlers have personally overseen the spending spree that now has us at AA+ with a negative outlook - why would anyone be surprised with this? Community agitator/organizer...unreal.

S&P said the reason they are downgrading US credit is because the country refuses to raise the required revenues to support itself. Their statement, not mine.

So, to a credit rating agency, debt itself is not what sinks a country's credit-worthiness - it's fiscally irresponsible to continue to cut taxes when revenues are clearly needed to pay off debt racked up for the last 12 years.

What? After 3 years Obama is finally playing the Republican patriot card? The bigger question is whether the tea-party Republican's are going to willing to spend the money. How much of a fight will non-tea party Republicans put up against their fellow tea party members? From the past history, not much. I cannot wait to see who argues against this plan.

Obama's policies have always supported the military and veterans' benefits. Not sure why you think otherwise. It was the Republicans who insisted on slashing military pay and veterans' benefits in the last budget cycle.

I do not believe Obama pushed hard enough for the military benefits for the past three years. I never said he did not support them. I was asking why all of a sudden he is now pushing hard with his new plan. He should have done that when the Republicans were slashing pay and benefits during the last budget cycle that you point out. That's when he should have played the patriot card to the Republicans. Maybe then the slashing would not have been so harsh?

Even tBaggers wouldn't fight trying to help veterans. Would they? Surely not!

Over a million of our vets unemployed. Getting a million Americans back to work is a first step and will build some momentum assisting many thousands of additional Americans.

Without the PUSH BACK from tBaggers!
