Church Brawl: Minister And Deacon Charged In Alabama Tasing and Stabbing

The Huffington Post     First Posted: 08/11/11 06:16 PM ET Updated: 10/11/11 06:12 AM ET

A deacon at an Alabama church stabbed the minister of music's mother after her son tased the church's pastor in a church brawl on Sunday evening after services.

The brawl involved between 12 and 15 people, said Lori Myles of the Mobile County Sheriff's Office, and allegedly began when the pastor of the New Welcome Church in St. Elmo, Ala. fired the church's minister of music and gave him his final paycheck.

Simone Moore, New Welcome's minister of music, allegedly tased Daryl Riley, the church's pastor, while arguing about the amount of the check, says the sheriff's office.

Harvey Hunt, a deacon at the church, stabbed Agolia Moore, Simone's mother, in the arm with a pocketknife during the brawl, according to WPMI-15.

Agolia Moore, who said in an interview (available below) that her son was ganged up on and only tased the pastor after being provoked, received 19 stitches and surgery for her stab wounds.

Simone told AL.com that he teaches special education at the Mobile County public schools. He also ran unsuccessfully as a Democrat for U.S. Senate in 2010. According to his WHNT-19 biography, he's also an R&B soul singer.

Myles, a public information officer with the Mobile County Sherrif's office, told HuffPost that Simone has previously been arrested on charges of harassment, twice in 1996 and once in 1997 but the disposition of those cases could not immediately be determined.

She added that although more than a dozen people were involved in the fight, only Simone and Hunt were charged with crimes.

Simone turned himself in and has been charged with misdemeanor assault for tasing the pastor. Hunt, who remains at large, has been charged with a felony, according to Myles. The Associated Press reports that Simone, who's 46, posted $1,000 bail.

Religion poisons just about everything it touches. 33, or so, wars being fought around the world and religion plays a roll in all of them. Our creator must be real proud of his creation.

It's not the Creator. We still have free will, each of us has a choice.
03:08 PM on 08/12/2011
That's right! All these haters of religion. As America loosed her religious bearing, it becomes more violent. As religious leaders loose their religious bearing they become more violent as well. And it's Man who does these things, through free will. I'm sure he is more displeased by the perverts and their behavior then a simple misunderstanding amoung friends. It can't compare to the degraded mayor of the City of Boston, Manino, who paraded Ellen "Degenerate" around the city showing this disgrace to femininity.

For the same reason I and many others carry guns to church. And, no, not for fighting with other church members. Remember last year when a gunman came into church on Sunday morning and started shooting everyone. An off duty police officer shot him dead. She said, "That's why I always carry."

The devil goes to church also. He will always try to discredit anything that has to do with God.
He is a master at his trade, and if we are not focused,he could use any means to create trouble right there in the church. Some people love to run with an incidence like this, and belittle all God fearing people, because it makes them feel justified in their life style, that is not in harmony with the bible and christianity. But, God's free mercy reaches over all the world. Paul was on a mission to persecute the church when God called him. There is hope for all, even those who try do discredit christian churches.

some people here in Alabama take their religion very seriously. That's why I stay as far as I can from any church plus I do not like other people telling me when and where I can pray

Are you a descendant of Alabama Gov. George Wallace by any chance?

We must be careful about drawing general conclusions about Christians from the actions of a few. All churches are a mixture of "sheep" and "goats." No Christian is perfect, but is hopefully on an upward road. This highlights the need for churches to select worship leaders carefully, and to check personal agendas at the door, and weapons have no place in church.

Sounds like a statement that could be said about all people. We must be careful about drawing conclusions about Christians, Hindus, Muslims, Hebrews, Blacks, Whites, Mexicans, .... from the actions of a few. This could be the basis of the next sermon. Hope the congregation isn't asleep and can take this thought into Monday and Tuesday and Wednesday........
