STOUGHTON, Mass. (Associated Press) - A Mississippi man who grew up in Massachusetts goes to great lengths for a good pizza.

About 1,400 miles to be exact.

David Schuler returned to Jackson, Miss., last weekend with 150 pies from the Town Spa in his home town of Stoughton (STOWE'-tun), just outside Boston.

It's a tradition he started years ago when he couldn't find a good slice in Mississippi.

The 150 frozen, vacuum-sealed pies he returned with was a record for him. They cost $1,200.

He made the 16-state trek in 24 hours, munching on Town Spa pizzas he kept on the passenger seat.

Restaurant manager Kerry Hughes tells The Enterprise of Brockton ( http://bit.ly/nsJaAO) he ships pizzas as far as California and Florida, but Schuler is his best out-of-state customer.

I've had pizza in Chicago, New York and all over the country, including at a place in Jackson, Mississippi called "Pizza Shak". Not a chain. Best homemade pizza of all of them was the pizza i got in Mississippi. So the guy who had pizzas shipped in from the northeast could have done better by just heading over to Pizza Shak. Seriously. I'm not making this up.

When I was in New Orleans I craved good pizza so I asked around about where the best was. I was referred over and over again to the California Pizza chain. Disgusting stuff. BBQ chicken on pizza...gross.

Lots of people commenting on why pizza is better in the northeast - having lived around the country I think its pretty simple. People in the northeast pay more for quality so they have better pizza. 1. Ingredients > You cant have the freshest ingredients at a mass pizza chain. Our local New York pizzeria often tells us "No, the bell peppers werent good so we didnt buy them this week". 2. Staff costs: It costs more skill to prepare the dough. The only way to lower the pizza cost is mechanize, freeze and use low cost- high turnover labor. 3. Ovens - The higher the temperature the better - but the harder to maintain. Chains use cheaper ovens.

People up here actually think pizza is supposed to cost around $15-$20/pie so often we eat a quality slice or two or we splurge on a pizza. (of course you can get a discount if you buy 1000). If you are buying your pizza with coupons 2 for $20 - well its not the same thing.

Also, you can pretty much find good pizza all over the US in most cities - its just not mainstream as it is in the New York area.

Being from Chicagoland transplanted in Arkansas... I'd head up there in a heartbeat for a supply of decent pizza. I don't blame the guy for wanting a good pie. They have no clue in the south how to make one. If they could the locals would probably not like it anyway. The best take out pizza I have found around here is Pizza Hut and you need to ask the crust be cooked longer and extra sauce too. Then it's somewhat palatable. No idea what a decent dog, gyros or Italian beef is either.

this guy is spot on...Town Spa pizza is definitely worth the drive, better than any you'll find in NYC/NJ...and it's true, they just have no clue how to make a decent pie in the south...oh and while were on the subject...my advice to Domino's would be "if you want people to like your pizza, you need to make pizza, and stop treating it like a pastry or some work of art...pizza is a "blue collar" pie and should be treated as such...your new "white collar" style pie just isn't pizza...pizza is not "designed" or made by "chef's", the only place you'll find a decent pie is the small "mom & pop" pizza shops, corperate pizza just plain sucks"

I would rather hear news like this then anything about Obama, government, wars or the general horrid state of the economy which we already know.

I was born and raised in Northern New Jersey, traveled across country and back. Lived in LA for 20 years and now reside in Charlotte, NC. It is true, no pizza tastes like NY/NJ area pizza. Most say it is the water, I now disagree. Realized I was wrong during the past 2 years when I found a pizza place here in SW Charlotte called Luigi"s Pizza. Two brothers from Brooklyn NY started with one pizza parlor here and now have 3 different locations in Charlotte as the word spread about a great NY pizza that had landed here. Luigi, told me, it was not the water, but the cheese and dough that makes a NY pizza taste so different. Use only real 100% whole milk mozzarella cheese and the right dough mixture, spread not to thick or thin. Then bake to perfection. Then, just "fold a slice" and enjoy, as the oil runs down your arm. See, its the oil from the cheese that runs down your arm, not olive oil added on the crust, like some think. I must admit that I never thought it possible to get a good pizza outside of NY/Jersey, but now I do. Any that read this in Charlotte, you must visit Luigi's at either Whitehall Commons off S. Tryon or on S. Tryon in Rivergate. Both location in Steele Creek. area or call 704-504-2015 for other locations and numbers. Why not, enjoy a slice of heaven while here.

As usual, an AOL page doesn't load. So I'll just assume the guy was really hungry.

Boston and Boston-burb pizza is the worst! Is this guy's tongue broke? I had pizza their before and it tasted like someone spilled a can of chef boyardee sauce and sprinkled some of that sawdust that the janitor used to toss on throw up...on the play ground when we were kids. I'm from Chicago and we know how to do pizza through thick and thin. This guy's got too much money and a mouth full of wack tastebuds. Friends don't let friends eat wack pizza!
