Gary Locke, US Ambassador To China, Photographed Ordering Coffee In Airport

Gary Locke

SEATTLE — A photo of the new U.S. ambassador to China carrying his own backpack and ordering his own coffee at an airport has charmed Chinese citizens not used to such frugality from their officials.

ZhaoHui Tang, a businessman from Bellevue, Wash., snapped the photo Friday on his iPhone when he spotted Gary Locke at the counter of an airport Starbucks. Locke is the first Chinese-American ambassador to China and a former governor of Washington state.

Tang uploaded the photo to the Chinese social media network Sina Weibo because he thought it was cool to run into the new ambassador at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport.

He didn't expect it to generate 40,000 reposts and thousands of comments.

"This is something unbelievable in China," said Tang, a Chinese-American citizen. "Even for low-ranking officials, we don't do things for ourselves. Someone goes to buy the coffee for them. Someone carries their bags for them."

Locke tried to use a coupon or voucher for the coffee, but the barista rejected it, Tang said. The ambassador then paid with a credit card, he said.

Tang, chief executive of an Internet advertising firm called adSage, was flying from Seattle to Silicon Valley. Locke was leaving for China from the next gate over.

Tang introduced himself to Locke when he took the picture and wished him luck in the new job.

This propaganda was well orchestrate but its content is vacuous, dim witted and an oxymoron. The mise en scene was too transparent to achieve its intended goal.

all govt officials should do their own thing and stop living like kings....Obama would be of good example if he got off that crazy car and air force one and road on southwest....then our govt would really be saving money and we citizens would be swimming in pools of money...or maybe not.....water is better

Hayull, we had a prime minister once who cleaned his own shoes in a hotel in London. And I'm not that old but I remember our PMs had their names in the phonebook until the late sixties. People used to ring them - and get an earful if they were rude :-).

My post will show soon but I didn't name the book I was posting about. It's 'In The Garden of Beasts" by Erik Larson.

Tang's ok. and is remindful of William E. Dodd, U.S. ambassador to Germany in the 1930's. In Erik Larson's new book about Dodd and his family in Germany at the time. Larson Shows us a very hard working man. and verfy smart man and one of simple tastes who was appalled at the "opulence' (that) abraded every principle of the Jeffersonian ideal that Dodd had embraced throughout his life.

Dodd had made it known before his arrival that he wanted 'modest quarters in a modest hotel' " but an embassy official had booked him into The Esplanade, and into rooms that made his family "gasp at  such magnificence". (At the time, the state department and the embassy weremost;y full of monied officials who looked down on Dodd and made fun of him

"Dodd walked from the Esplanade to his office each morning, a 15 minute stroll along the Tiergartenstrasse ... a photograph of Dodd at work in his office during his first week or so in Berlin shows him seated at a large, elaborately carved desk before a soaring tapestry hung on the wall behind him, with a large complicated phone to his left at a reach of maybe 5 feet. There is something comical about the image: Dodd slight of frame , his collar stiff...utterly dwarfed by the opulence that surrounds him. The photograph caused a good deal of mirth back at the State Department ...

At every turn Dodd seemed to viol;ate some aspect of embassy custom, at least in the eyes of his counselor of embassy, George Gordon. Dodd insisted on walking to meetings with government officials. Once, when paying a call on the nearby Spanish embassy, he made Gordon walk with him , both men dressed in morning coats and silk hats. In a letter to (writer) Thornton Wilder (Dodd's wife) Martha wrote that 'Gordon had rolled in the gutter in an apoplectic fit.' When Dodd drove anywhere, he took the family's Chevrolet, no match for the Opels and Mercedeses favored by senior Reich officials ...July 24, (Dodd) committed a particularly egregious sin". He met with a visiting U.S. congressman in the office of Messersmith.,  America's counsul general for Germany. Gordon refused to attend. "The reason: pure pique. In Gordon's view, Dodd had "degraded" himself and his post by stooping to attend a meeting in an office of aman of inferior rank. Dodd observed in his diary, "Gordon is an industrious career man with punctilio developed to the nth degree".

Faciinating book and riveting book about the Dodd family's time in Germany. This "mild mannered professor from Chicago brings along his wife, son and flamboyant daughter" into what they believed would be an important realm and it was but turned into a nightmare. You really can' t put this book down.

His coupon was turned down? Good thing that didn't happen in China. The coffee salesmen would disappear along with the owner.

This is what happens when you take on a far left government. You create two classes, a working class and a ruling class. Read Marx, Middle Class must be destroyed in order to promote equality. Thats what leftists want.

What happens when you take on a far right government? Just look around you. The USA you're living in is the result of thirty years of far right government. No jobs. No economy. Ever widening gap between rich and poor and the destruction of the middle class.

Your post is at complete variance with the facts of the last thirty years of republican economic policy. The tax structure has decimated the middle class, and enriched the wealthy to exceed the disastrous levels that caused the Great Depression. The wealthiest 10 percent now control 84% of the nation's wealth. The lower 40% control .03%. You read that right. This is a trend that didn't happen in the last 2-1/2 years, so don't go blaming Obama. As Warren Buffet says: There is a class war in this country, and my side has won.
Economically speaking, more than anything in the world, I want a strong middle class restored in this country. It's our only hope!

In the USA elected official work for us.

As much as the media is biased, they still keep a close eye on our elected officials. If they get caught doing something corrupt and it hits the new networks, they are out of there !

thats pretty funny since we have a bribery system every election and a capitol teaming with lobbyist because influence is peddled so shamelessly to the highest bidder.

our officials work for who ever pays them

Doesn't the Queen of England wipe thy own royal tush? And with all of the royal potpourie, the tiny little hint of queenlyness surely is scented by he discriminating nose. Oh, dear.
