Jared Cano, High School Bomb Plotter, Aimed For Mass Casualties, Police Say

MITCH STACY   08/17/11 11:43 PM ET   AP

TAMPA, Fla. — Police were already keeping an eye on 17-year-old expelled student Jared Cano when they were tipped off that he was allegedly planning to bomb his old high school when classes resumed. In his apartment, they found shrapnel, plastic tubing, timing and fuse devices that he was amassing in a plot he intended to be worse than the Columbine mass killings, police said Wednesday.

Before Tuesday's discovery, Cano has been arrested several times, most recently accused of breaking into a house and stealing a handgun, Tampa police said. He had a court-ordered curfew and was on a police watch list. Officers checked up on him from time to time.

"We've been very, very familiar with him," police Maj. John Newman said.

Besides the bomb-making materials, officers said they also found a journal with schematic drawings of rooms inside Freedom High School and statements about Cano's intent to kill specific administrators and any students who happened to be nearby next week.

His juvenile arrests included burglary, carrying a concealed weapon, altering serial numbers on a firearm and drug possession. None had stuck. They had been either dismissed or no action had been taken, beyond putting his name on the police watch list.

The school scheme was mapped out minute-by-minute and he wanted to cause more casualties than the 1999 Columbine High School massacre, which killed 13 before the two shooters killed themselves, said Police Chief Jane Castor.

Police and the school system "were probably able to thwart a potentially catastrophic event, the likes of which the city of Tampa has not seen, and hopefully never will," Castor said.

He also had a marijuana-growing operation, police said. On his Facebook page, he says he attends the "University of Marijuana," where he is studying "how to grow weed."

Principal Chris Farkas and other administrators knew Cano, too. He'd been expelled in April 2010. Farkas said Tuesday that Cano likely would have been "red-flagged" as soon as he stepped on campus and probably would not have been able to pull off his plan.

Farkas said he is accustomed to all sorts of threats at a school of 2,100 on a large campus in the northern suburbs. Still, he was spooked about what might have been.

"My first response was shock," he said. "I wanted to see if it was a real threat."

"Once I found out and saw the information and saw what was taken from the apartment complex, that was when the reality and the fear set in that this was a real situation," he said.

The St. Petersburg Times reported that prosecutors at a hearing Wednesday said that when Cano was arrested he repeated his plan to detonate a bomb and cause mass casualties at Freedom, which opened in 2002 and was named to honor the victims of 9/11.

Cano tried to speak when he appeared before a judge but was quickly hushed by a public defender standing beside him.

"The plot wasn't..." Cano said, before the public defender stopped him and told the judge that "he has no comment," according to the Times.

Police told Farkas that Cano worked alone. Parents of every student got a recorded call informing them about Cano's arrest, said the principal of the high-performing school built to handle the overflowing northern suburbs in an area some locals refer to as New Tampa.

Authorities did not name the administrators targeted nor would they disclose who tipped them off.

After Cano was expelled from Freedom, he attended a charter school and left voluntarily in March, according to Hillsborough County schools spokeswoman Linda Cobbe. At that point he was 16 and could have chosen to drop out. He was not registered to attend classes this upcoming school year.

Cano faces felony charges of possessing bomb-making materials, cultivating marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia, possessing of marijuana and threatening to throw, project, place or discharge a destructive device. He was being held in a juvenile lockup in Tampa.

The Department of Children and Families said the agency investigated Cano's family in 2009. A spokesman gave no other details except to say DCF found no evidence of abuse or neglect.

Police said his mother let them search the apartment in a modest complex just a few miles from the school. The Tampa Tribune reported that Cano's great-grandfather Elliot Horning said that Cano's mother, Michelle, was divorced from his dad and worked as a math teacher at another Tampa high school. His mother was not at the apartment Wednesday.

Cano's Facebook page includes photos of him holding a machete and drinking from a bottle of malt liquor.

He lists two favorite quotes: "lessons not learned in blood are soon forgotten" and "dont trust anybody, cuz they all just wait for you to s--- a brick of gold so they can take it." He listed just 25 friends and no one that was out around the apartment complex seemed to know him.

On his Facebook page Tuesday morning, Cano wrote: "i jut did the dumbest thing ever!"

Good work by law enforcement following up on him, despite the juvenile justice system's lack of action even with multiple arrests.

There seem to be a lot of people celebrating the assumption that this kid is white (he could be Hispanic because Cano is a common Hispanic last name).
My question is, what makes people celebrating that the kid is "white" any better or different than the people who assume that Arabs or others are always the suspects?

What do these young people see when they look at our country? Lies and greed has run rampant in every corner of our culture. The pedophiles exposed in the clergy every day, the corrupt politicians on all levels and both parties. The exploitation of people for profit has become the norm in our industry. Fine print has replaced honor and integrity. Gone are the days of the good guy wins and the bad guy losses, that I grew up with. The church has failed them, their government has failed them, their schools have failed them, and in many cases, their parents have failed them. In sports, music, movies and television, the message is clear, it's not how you play the game that matters any more, but only if you win. And we act surprised to find children with hearts full of hate.

All very true. However, some kids just never adjust to the world, but wish the world to adjust to them. I would be more interested to know if he had parents, siblings or other relatives who pay no attention to the law. I am guessing, but he could far more easily be emulating them than making a statement about the politicians and our capitalistic system. Don't get me wrong, I see plenty that anyone could be disillusioned by, but he could also just have really bad braid chemistry.

I think you are correct on both points. The family is a huge factor, it can counter a bad environment for a child or make it worse. As so many young are exposed to so much media, I picked on that, but it can be made less of a negative influence if the parents take the time to do so. Example, we canceled our cable when the kids got to the age when MTV tweaked their interest. My wife and I did without or rented movies fit to watch. We also gave them books to read, something that can open a young mind for life. It is appalling to me how few parents see the benefit in letting them discover that a person in France or Russia 200 years ago had the same feelings or thoughts as they do. Not only does it lessen the tendency to be racist, it helps them understand themselves better during those rough years when puberty hits and peer pressure is so great.

And yes, you mention bad wiring, it happens. I have seen it in a family that did as much right as is typical but the boy was bad from the git go, sociopathic to an extreme and a life long criminal, but that is rare. Thanks for the reply.

---- This can be said of these people rioting in England a - Also of those that will eventually are and will en-mass run amok here. We have on this planet a entire generation that was raised hearing that "they" will ultimately inherit crushing national debt - facing a rather grim to non job outlook - A planet wide shortage of natural resources - The exhaustion of our food supplies - Global warming and rising seas - with the outcome of retirement through working or begging until sickness or starvation takes them. They are a group of disenfranchised, disinherited, disenchanted, disheartened and completely disoriented as to what their future is. (trapped in a world they never made) Then inter TV and all its crap. Video games, Computers, don't forget Religion and the internets etc etc etc.

Since almost all school boy terrorists in America are young white boys, should we racially profile all young white boys? Or should we make that one exception?

Of course you point this out here and you get labeled a racist or "anti-white"

I'm a 2nd Generation Scot in the United States.. I'm about as pasty pale white as you get and even I see how much of a pass whites in society get.

Its crap and unfair to anybody else with any color on there skin. This country is biased with heavy black/mexican mentality and conviction rates and it needs to stop

The kid is in jail, so somebody made the connection. Also, Cano is a common Hispanic last name so he may not even be "white."

Not a true statement. Tampa is my home and this kids behavior should not taint the outstanding things all the other students are doing in Florida and Tampa Bay. Majority of young students are doing the right thing, just a few bad apples garner all the attention, much like the adults in Florida. Not all Floridians are crazy, just the ones that are seem to get the attention by the media.....

Well, one good thing (about the family's post-Jared situation) is that his mother will most likely be receiving a felony charge for the "grow operation" as well... Maybe some time behind bars will help her realize the magnitude of her failure. Something's gotta give.

I'm a supporter of legalization, so it's a shame to have this violent criminal associated with marijuana. Marijuana is NOT synonymous with violence; IMHO as well as numerous studies. (**not claiming MJ isn't used and abused by violent criminals**)

I know, I know. Contradicting myself. I really just think the mother needs to have some consequences for her carelessness and ignorance. Especially after her [crazy?] son planned, bought supplies for, and nearly acted on such a heinous crime. Similar to the Columbine gunmen: how is it possible to not know that there are bomb-making materials in your home? Really.

Sounds like he needed a role model. Saddest part about the story is his mom's a math teacher. She doesn't know what her son is involved with yet she's responsible for other children? They should fire her and charge him as an adult.

I think it's pretty obvious that this kid is getting far on his looks. He's really cute too, one would be daffy to not admit. But just a simple google search of "Jared Cano Facebook" pops up a fanpage to advocate for his freedom, mostly inhabited by a bunch of young girls screaming how cute he is and he should be freed on those grounds alone. I think all of the judges in the past have succumb to his pretty visage as well and with a simple hypothesis I would like to insinuate that he's probably got a pretty golden tongue to go along with everything else. Who else could get out of so many impressive charges in their past but a handsome young man with a gift of speaking? Jared Cano.
