Turkey Bombs Iraq PKK Bases: Reports

Turkey Bombs Iraq Pkk Bases

SUZAN FRASER   08/17/11 04:36 PM ET   AP

ANKARA, Turkey — Turkish jets launched air raids on suspected Kurdish rebel bases in northern Iraq on Wednesday, Turkish and Kurdish media reported, hours after eight soldiers and a village guard were killed in an ambush by the autonomy-seeking guerrillas.

Some 15 warplanes took off from a Turkish base to strike at bases which the rebels belonging to the Kurdistan Workers' Party, or PKK, use as a springboard to attack targets inside Turkey, according to a report on the NTV news channel. CNN-Turk television said Turkish F-16s were involved in the raids.

The Firat news agency, which is close to the rebels, said the Turkish jets were also targeting Qandil, a mountain on the Iraqi-Iranian border, where the rebels' leaders are believed to be hiding.

The Turkish reports were based on unidentified sources and there was no immediate official confirmation of the strikes.

If confirmed, the raids would be Turkey's first cross border offensive since last summer, when Turkish warplanes carried out a series of retaliatory air raids on suspected rebel hideouts across the border.

Turkish officials warned of a major offensive against the rebels following the ambush on a military convoy near the border with Iraq, that killed eight soldiers and a village guard working with them. Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan said armored personnel carriers in the convoy came under rocket fire after being attacked with roadside bombs.

Defense Minister Ismet Yilmaz vowed tough response immediately after the attack, as the military launched an air and ground offensive in the largely Kurdish Hakkari province where the attack happened, Turkey's state television reported.

"The retaliation they will find will be manifold stronger," Yilmaz said.

More than 30 Turkish soldiers have died in intensified rebel attacks since July, including one that killed 13 service members in July, leading to a major military offensive in southeastern Turkey.

Earlier this week, Erdogan said Turkey is at the end of its tether and hinted toward a strong offensive after the end of the holy month of Ramadan.

But Wednesday's attack appears to have forced Turkey to bring plans forward.

Asked earlier Wednesday about the possibility of a cross-border offensive, Erdogan replied: "These things are not talked about they are done."

Turkey has frequently launched air strikes or sent soldiers across the border to fight the rebels.

In Washington, U.S. State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said the United States stands with Turkey in its fight against the PKK.

"We support Turkey in its fight against terror, and we will continue to work with the government of Turkey to combat terrorism in all forms," Nuland said.

The PKK, considered a terrorist organization by the United States and the European Union, is fighting for autonomy in southeast Turkey. The conflict has killed tens of thousands of people since 1984.

Turkey should apologize.

The Kurds have an autonomous region in Iraq, granted they want the entire thing including lands in Syria and Turkey but shouldn't they focus on building the oil rich, fertile land they now have in Iraq instead of killing the soldiers of a regional power?

In a generation or two when they've turned Iraqi Kurdistan into a powerhouse, they can simply walk in and annex the lands they claim in Syria and Turkey. They should focus on what they have now.

Kurds are not all on the same boat so to speak. The PKK has little to do with the goings on in northern Iraq. The PKK need to be kicked out of N IRaq by the iraqis if they want the Turks to stop their raids.

It's not like all the Kurds would benefit from Northern Iraqi's Kurds. It's like saying why are minorities in Maine mad since the ones in New York are doing so well. The Kurds power in N. Iraq is great for them but that doesn't help the tens of millions of other Kurds IN Turkey, Iran and Syria.

And Turkey has the b*lls to demand an apology from Israel over the flotilla incident last year. They should be apologizing to the Kurds and Armenians.

Is that why the Mossad has been supplying the PKK and supporting the (former?) Ergenekan deep state?

As son as the infamous "one minute" debate with Peres, there has been constant attacks on Turkey by the PKK. Israel supports terrorists when it suits it.

Turkey is bombing people and locations in a neighboring sovereign country?

Is this the same Turkey who is demanding an apology from Israel for having taken wholly justified, though imperfect, action against some troublemakers who launched their nonsensical mission to needlessly instigate an incident from Turkey?

Hypocrites!

israel should demand an immediate apology from turkey. on the other hand, perhaps israel should take a page from the turkish playbook, and bomb the next flotilla launched from turkey.

Which Kurds? The PKK? The Islamist? The secular? The ... Are you kidding? How about narrow your requests a little. And also, give them land? Who's land? Turkey? Iraq? Iran? Syria? Do you think that that would be smart? to develop a land locked country in the middle of a very pissed off neighborhood? Smart? no. As soon as America looses interest, which it will since it always does, do tyuo think that those nations would wait one second to take back that land? Do you like bloodshed? Do you enjoy war? Im sure you do. As long as it's not here in the good old USA.

The KURDS who aren't part of the PKK and aren't Islamist account easily for 90% of the general Kurdish population. Give it to THOSE Kurds and please, if you honestly believe in that argument then you must have a very negative opinion for the existence of Israel.

Turkey why are you "Illegally" occupying Kurdistan?
07:29 PM on 08/17/2011
It is, of course, impossible for Turkey to illegally occupy Kurdistan when Kurdistan itself has multiple meanings but, as a sovereign territory, does not exist.

One can make all kinds of arguments that some legal, sovereign entity called Kurdistan *ought* to exist. And then subsequent arguments about how other sovereign nations should relate to this Kurdistan.

But you'll win no points for your cause with drive-by rhetoric that's, at best, misleading.

It is, of course, impossible for Israel to illegally occupy Palistine when Palistine itself has multiple meanings but, as a sovereign territory, does not exist.

wait. wait, insert palestine in place of kurdistan and your points will then make sense.

The US has a unilateral defense pact with Iraq should anyone attack. Turkey is a member of NATO and a US ally. The Kurds where the only ones who actually helped the illegal invasion of Iraq by the Bush Administration. So who do we defend? Who do we attack? Is this a defensive or offensive situation? Doing nothing won’t stop the Turks nor help the Northern Iraqi Kurds.

Norther Iraqi Kurds are not being targeted. The Turks are going after those who conduct raids in Turkey. 17 Soldiers were recently killed by the PKK. Should Turkey just sit on its hands? As you mentioned Turkey is a NATO nation. Look at clause V in the NATO charter. An attack against one is an attack against all. The PKK attacked Turkey, that's why no one is saying anything to Turkey for going after them.

The PKK terror group is supported by Israel. Turkey has every right to go after these terrorists and to attack their supporters in Israel.

Again, which Kurds? Do you think that all Kurds are supported by the US? The US as well as the EU, Iraq, the UN, and Israel list the PKK as an international terrorist organization. If you have nothing against the US killing bin Laden in Pakistan, then you should rethink your assessment.

The Turks are impressive. They create the "right" impression by threatening Assad, then attack their enemies a la Assad. LOL

More cutsie comments that do nothing but highlight your own ignorance. Turkey is not going after civilians. They are going after armed militants who use Northern Iraq as a base of ops against Turkey. Any country would do the same.
