A North Texas juror got an unfriendly reaction from a judge after he tried to 'friend' the defendant on Facebook..

The Star-Telegram reports that Jonathan Hudson pled guilty to four counts of contempt of court as a result of his actions, which his lawyer described as a "silly mistake."

Hudson was picked for a case stemming from a 2008 car accident. After the trial ended for the day on July 18, he tried to add the defendant Courtney Downing as friend on Facebook. That started a chain reaction with Downing complaining to her lawyer who told the judge. The judge kicked Hudson off the jury the next morning.

He later apologized to Downing in a Facebook message.

"I pretty much just said I was selected to be on a jury," his Facebook message said, according to The Star-Telegram. "I'm pretty upset over this and I'm sure you guys are, too. I guess you know what it feels like to be prosecuted, too. Good luck with everything."

The AP notes that Texas has added specific language to jury instructions that prohibits jurors from discussing the case on social networking sites.

Last year, a Detroit-area woman was kicked off a jury for commenting about an ongoing case on Facebook. As punishment, the woman was required to compose a five-page essay about the constitutional right to a fair trial.

In 2009, the New York Times wrote a piece about the ways in which the Internet has contributed to a several mistrials across the country.
