Sheriff: Facebook Boast Leads To Arrest

Facebook Arrest

08/29/11 06:14 AM ET   AP

YAKIMA, Wash. — A suspected reckless motorcycle rider has discovered the law's long arm now reaches into cyberspace.

The Yakima County Sheriff's office says they tracked the 19-year-old man down via Facebook.

Deputy Chris Gray says early Monday in a release that the incident began when a man on a motorcycle outran pursuing deputies late last week near Moxee, just east of Yakima.

Authorities later noticed a Facebook posting by a man boasting about eluding officers, as well as a photo on the page of a motorcycle similar to the one they sought.

Gray says that when the suspect was rousted at 4 a.m. Saturday by deputies with both a search warrant and a printout of the page, he acknowledged he was the rider.

The man, whose name was not released, has been charged with reckless driving and other infractions.

This goes back about 45 years ago, so thankfully beyond the statue of limitations. I was riding home from work at midnight on a dark stretch of moon light country highway on a Kowalski KZ1000. This was one of the fastest bikes at the time easily topping 170. I was doing 80, leaning back on my seat with cruise control. I was quickly approaching the only car on the road that had its brake lights on and was pulling off to the side. When I saw it was a squad, I jump on the throttle an past him at better than a 100. Seconds later, all I could see way off behind me was the occasional red flashing lights. It was a four mile straight shot to my turn off with only one major road to cross and no nearby towns. When I got home, pulled in the garage, and spent the night in the living room looking out the window for the police. The only logical thing to do was not ride my bike for the rest of the season and never opened my mouth about it, that is until now. Yes, as I look back on it, it was stupid but I just back from Vietnam with the need for speed. Now that was a rush that I never repeated…………

You sure about the bike? The kz1000 wasn't introduced until 1976 and 45 years would put it around 1965; and it's top speed was under 140, closer to 130.

As I think back, you are correct about the years. I have been here in my present home about 27 years and the location were I was working at the time was in the mid 70’s, and I subtracted wrong. But, unless there was a speedometer error, that bike, if I remember correctly had a 160 mph speedometer and would wind past that number. There was some minor work done to it, but nothing significant. Thanks for bringing back memories.....Barry

I doubt it happened in Texas and it couldn't have the Highway Patrol.

Coming soon, the Office Of Facebook Investigative Research.

The Police Chief reported that "we laid off 25 detectives, hired two Facebook researchers who now lead the department with an arrest and conviction rate on both cold and current cases up 50%".
