OSLO, Norway -- The tooth fairy in disguise? No, just a simple tooth thief.

A man dressed in a black leather hat and a dark coat on Wednesday ran off with an eight-foot (2.5 meter) whale tooth from a museum in the Norwegian city Stavanger.

Museum official Atle Fiskaa says the tooth was more than 100 years old and valued at around $9,300. Fiskaa says the thief was between 40 and 50 years old and took off with the tooth together with a big, white dog that he had left outside the museum before entering.

The incident has been reported to police, who are searching for the thief.

"Whale tooth", talk about dumbing down for the audience. With that said, the image in my mind of a man in black managing to steal an 8-ft tusk, in apparent broad daylight, with a white dog waiting for him outside has given me such hope for adventure and excitement! Wonderful story. I mean, was this guy from the future? Did the dog put him up to it? Awesome.

Of course a narwhal tusk is a tooth. But not mentioning the narwhal in the headline or the story was very confusing. Tighten up on the editing please.

It was the tusk of a narwhal (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Narwhal).

Two interesting facts:
- The man is reported in Norwegian media to have been rather small (165 cm / 5' 5" tall).
- During the middle ages, vikings from Greenland made fortunes selling Narwhal teeth in Europe, claiming that they were horns from the unicorn, which were attributed medicinal and magical properties, and valued as high or higher than their weight in gold.

I would really like to have seen this small man make his getaway, on foot, with an 8 ft tooth, and a big dog on a leash. It must have been a sight. Witnesses remembering it shouldn't be too hard to find.

With whale teeth that are 8 feet long, and the fact that someone has said that the ocean is filled with whale sperm, has me rethinking going in the ocean anytime soon:)

Give the guy a break...he was just looking for a crime to "sink his teeth into." Bad, I know, but I couldn't help myself.

What's the matter, HuffPo couldn't find a stock image of a narwhal, so they incorrectly used an orca instead?

This is the only whale that has a tooth capable of being 8' long:

You are indeed correct. This brief story is poorly written and bereft of much needed detail.

You are right the "tooth" had to be a Narwhal tusk, the headline and article are incorrect.
Just imagine the size of a whale that could have an 8 foot TOOTH...???

I know, just think of it! Not even the largest prehistoric sea creatures had teeth anywhere near that long. I study and collect prehistoric fossils, mainly oceanic, and so far the longest teeth belong to Leviathan melvillei (a 60' sperm whale ancestor) at around 14", or roughly 1.5 times the length of a T-Rex tooth. Scary stuff... not 8' scary, but terrifying nonetheless.
