JEFF MARTIN, Associated Press

ATLANTA -- A man who leaped into an out-of-control Jeep as it weaved down a busy west Georgia parkway doesn't consider himself a hero after saving the driver, who had suffered a seizure.

"I don't really consider it being a hero, I just consider it being at the right place at the right time," Michael Perry told The Associated Press in a telephone interview Thursday.

The driver of the Jeep, Christopher Sanders, said he just blacked out suddenly behind the wheel.

He credits Perry with saving him from being crushed by oncoming cars as his vehicle weaved and slowed on a 65-mph thoroughfare in Columbus, a city on the state line with Alabama. Cars were whizzing past during their evening commute about 7:20 p.m. on a Thursday a week ago.

Perry said it took mere seconds to park his truck and dive into the Jeep Cherokee, which he estimates was traveling around 15 mph when he took hold of the steering wheel. He said both of his legs were hanging from the vehicle as he guided the drifting Jeep to a stop against a guardrail.

Perry said he didn't hesitate when he saw what was happening.

"I just wanted to get him to safety and then make sure he didn't die on me," he said.

The 26-year-old mechanic said he always tries to aid stranded motorists if he can. In fact, he said he was on his way to help a friend who had run out of gas when he came upon the Jeep slowing and weaving ahead of him.

Both men are residents of the Columbus suburb of Phenix City, just over the state line in Alabama. Now Perry said he's looking forward to visiting with Sanders, 27. Their families talk of holding a reunion barbecue.

Sanders said he's grateful for his good Samaritan. He said he began suffering periodic seizures about 10 years ago, but never experienced one while driving and the latest episode was unusually severe.

"It's a blessing that he was actually there and did what he did," Sanders said. "The situation could have gone dozens of different ways, but it went the best possible way."

Police Sgt. Mark Graydon told the Columbus Ledger-Enquirer, which first reported the daring rescue, that what happened "was unbelievable."

Perry bruised and banged up his leg after it got caught between the Jeep and the guardrail, but neither man was seriously harmed.

"Everything worked out right, and it was pretty miraculous," Graydon said.

Perry said he was late in heading out to help his friend who had run out of gas that day, but "something told me it wasn't going to hurt to be late."

He said that put him behind Sanders' Jeep at the right time when it careened down the parkway.

Sanders' wife, Wendy, told the Columbus paper after the rescue: "I do believe in guardian angels."

So he didn't leap " out of jeep", but into a jeep? Good grief.

My headline says "leaps out of jeep". This man was driving a truck and parked it, then he leaped into the jeep..........................to park his truck and dive into the Jeep Cherokee,

Excellent job Mr. Perry. Not only did you save Mr. Sanders' life, but possibly the life of many others. You may not think you are a hero, but I am certain that Mr. Sanders and his family will politely and happily disagree with you on that. I love that you are thinking of a reunion BBQ - great idea, what a great way to make a new friend!! And go figure, we've got a built-in holiday weekend for you to celebrate on every year. :)

Wonderful story! It's always great to read a story like this will all the other terrible headlines. He might not think so, but in my book he is a hero! You unselfishly save the life of someone you don't even know, you are hero!

Great story...

And then I think of the two paramedics that didn't help the woman because they were eating lunch and she ended up dying.

Sorry to damper the mood. I'm always told I'm so negative.
08:02 PM on 09/03/2011
Yep, you are... how about focus on this story since that's what this blog is about, and post the negative comments on the appropriate blog. This is a truly great story, of a truly great samaritan who not only saved a strangers life, but possible the life of many other strangers.

Ditto what sophie7190 said. And while you're at it, how about remebering all the times paramedics HAVE saved lives instead of letting one negative story blind you to all the good that is done by fire, EMS and police.

Kudoes to Mr Perry! He most likely was unable to realize the magnitude of his heroic act due to adreneline rush. What a great guy!
08:11 PM on 09/03/2011
Uh oh, you spelled kudos wrong, let's beat you up too! Totally joking but just had to make fun of alll the negativefolks that are taking such a great story and doing nothing but pointing out the error in the headline. This was such a heroic and unselfish act, the way we are supposed to be. Kudoes, Koodos and Kudos to Mr. Perry!!!
09:46 PM on 09/03/2011
Oh, no, where are all the negative nellies commenting on a typos!!! Totally kidding and just having fun with the kudos spelling since people seem to be more focused on that than the greatness of this story! Totally agreed - Kudoes, Koodos, and Kudos to Mr. Perry - great story, excellent man!

People like this fellow, Michael Perry, do not want to be called heroes.

They don't because they feel compelled to help their fellow human beings. Something inside them makes them step up and save lives, protect victims, help with a flat tire...and they have no real control over it.

My big brother was like that and he was a great role model.

Don't get me wrong, I am not trying to downplay what Michael Perry did, I am just saying that it is pretty cool that there are people like him out there.

Yep. It's internal wiring or something. Compelling. Good job Mr. Perry.

Am I the only one who noticed that the headline indicates that Mr. Perry jumped OUT of a Jeep when in fact he jumped INTO the Jeep?
11:39 PM on 09/02/2011
OK. Into not Out of. You're a school teacher aren't you Yakitty? Try to relax. You don't have to start grading papers until school starts again.

What would our future 7th generation think of us?

I noticed it too. I was expecting to read a thread about some guy who was driving his Jeep down the road, when he saw someone in trouble by the roadside, so he slowed his Jeep down and jumped out even before it was stopped in order to save precious seconds to save the person's life.

Close, but no cigar. "Close" only counts in horseshoes and hand grenades, eh?
09:42 PM on 09/03/2011
Well it counted this time... saved the guys life. Let's focus on the good in this story instead of picking apart a great story!

Why do reporters keep asking heroes if they feel like heroes? Do they have any idea how assinine they sound?
07:46 PM on 09/02/2011
I completely agree with your statement. It's painful to watch people have to answer that dumb question. Don't media spokespeople have ANY imagination? Guess not.

When someone thinks about anothers' needs, and takes actions to save them, that is a hero.
