First Posted: 09/15/11 02:01 AM ET Updated: 11/14/11 05:12 AM ET

KETCHIKAN, Alaska -- Fire officials in Alaska say a pet rabbit woke its owner when the house was on fire, allowing the woman to get herself and her daughter safely out of the burning building. But the rabbit ended up dying from smoke inhalation.

The woman was awakened early Tuesday by the rabbit scratching her chest, and she saw the house was full of smoke.

She rushed to get her daughter out of the home, but the rabbit was left behind in the confusion.

The fire's cause is under investigation. The fire department wouldn't identify the home's two residents.

The woman tried very hard to save the beloved pet. The house was full of smoke and she could not see. Although the rabbit was initially on her chest, the rabbit and woman both jumped out of bed in a crazy panic. When rabbits are frightened they hide. This is what happened. The woman tried very hard to find the rabbit and stayed in the home longer then was safe. The woman and child are very sorry and the rabbit lived a wonderful and loved life. RIP sweet bunny

I fail to see why it was too difficult to pick up the rabbit that was already on or right next to her...at least the homeowner and her daughter are safe though.

Exactly, that's what I say. I don't understand it either.

Haha fast forward 50 years from now when this lady dies and goes to the pearly gates there's going to be a rabbit angrily standing there pointing his paw at her saying "you!"

You'd think she would have immediately tucked her pet rabbit tight in her arms since it was right there on her chest, then ran for her daughter, it's not like she had to run around and look for the rabbit. If it had not been on her chest waking her, she would have been dead! Was right there, why not grab it! Makes me sad and sick at her selfishness.

I think I personally would have been a little more mindful of the creature that saved my life!

Did the rabbit's owner decide to make Hasenpfeffer ?!

Awww, sad. A lot of people don't understand that rabbits can be affectionate pets, like dogs. I've had several house rabbits. One would jump up on the bed each morning to wake me by licking my nose.

The rabbit was probably the smartest inhabitant of the house.

it's very sad that the died, but i'm guessing the people posting about how horrible it is that they left the rabbit have never been awoken in the middle of the night with their house on fire. i have. you forget everything except figuring out a way to get you and your human relatives out - first. my dog woke me up. luckily our fire was contained to one room and we were able to get our dog out as well but the #1 priority is getting the kids and yourself out.

I agree totally. They just assume that there was no fear, chaos or that the rabbit was waiting calmly by the exact door or window they used to escape. It's a shame but the priority is to get the kids out and to call for help.

Consider myself one of "they", lol and never assumed the rabbit was waiting any place, calmly or in a panic. From the article I understood that it was on the woman's chest for God's sake, waking her up! Saving her life so she could save her daughter's life as well. So to me it's much more than just "a shame" she left the rabbit, it's sickening and selfish. Chaos and fear? Yeah, that's probably what the rabbit felt when it woke it's owner!

People would be offended if you joked about murdering their dog or cat. I wish people would stop the obnoxious 'rabbit stew' jokes. They aren't funny.
01:24 PM on 09/15/2011
Naw. Most people correctly understand the definition of murder.

mur·der/ˈmərdər/
Noun: The unlawful premeditated killing of one human being by another.

It is impossible to 'murder' an animal. However much you like to transpose your human emotions on them, they are still just animals; and do not share your 'love' and 'affection'... They will gladly feed off of your corpse when you die and are left alone with them, and won't have any qualms about it.

That aside, i happen to agree with you on the rabbit stew jokes. A pet is not an animal for slaughter, and the classification of an animal as a pet carries with it a moral obligation on the part of human beings to recognize that status; at least in western societies.

It is a special classification and relationship, and it behooves others to recognize that status. Failure to recognize that is on parallel with failure to recognize the special status afforded women, children and the handicapped in dangerous situations.
