ABINGTON, Mass. -- The chairman of the school committee in Abington, Mass., is apologizing for a magic trick he performed before a televised meeting this week in which he appeared to tear the bra off a fellow committee member through her clothes.

The trick was performed Tuesday by Russell Fitzgerald, an amateur magician known to open meetings with a little sleight of hand. It was met with stunned silence.

He says he is sorry for the embarrassment he caused committee member Ellen Killian and his unwitting accomplice, teacher Steve Shannon. He also says he will no longer perform tricks before meetings.

Killian says she was shocked. The teachers' union says in a statement that Shannon was unaware of the trick Fitzgerald planned.

What an uplifting article for the 1st of October.

Oops. The amateur magician did indeed make a mistake. I have performed this trick many times, but never on a woman! You tell the crowd it's time to let them in on a secret known only to Mr. Name Goes Here, and very close friends. Then, you pop the bra out of his shirt (it is a trick, people) and everyone laughs. So he gets his butt kicked for not thinking a bit more. But this is not a capital punishment crime.

I'm not sure I get it. People were shocked, but about what? Did he actually remove her bra or was it a trick. The article says it was an illusion. So which is it?

What did her knockers look like after they came unhooked?

Lighten up people!

Personally I think it sounds funny enough. I'm curious what they were thinking he would do when he invited them up to help demonstrate a trick. As I assume is what he did since the story is so incredibly short and not much else to go on here.

Well IMO this was a sexist act and he should be fired. Just earlier this week a female teacher was fired for sexting a student.

His apology and "i will not perform anymore magic tricks" apology should be given a very heavy penalty instead of setting the acr aside.

What to heck was he thinking, what a shame.

The problem with your thinking is first you sound young and are probably amused by the mention of bra's.

Secondly he is on his job as a "Professional" and is suppossed to conduct himself as such.

Thirdly a magician would select a "volunteer" or have his own "assistant". This guy is truly no magician and may have done this to see what reaction he would get. If no reaction it may have escalated.

If it didnt offend at least one person at the meeting it wouldnt have gotten to the media.

You do understand that solicitous behavior by an adult to a minor is illegal, correct? But he wasn't texting a student, and he didn't rape anyone, or molest any children, or kill anyone or commit any other crime, nor was he being anti-gay/black/Asian/Muslim/etc. (according to the article). He is guilty of being somewhat tasteless, and not being as funny as he thinks he is. Perhaps a good flogging, or maybe he should be made to watch Al Gore prattle on for a few hours.
