Bear Attacks Pennsylvania Couple In Their Home

Couple Attacked By Bear Pennsylvania

First Posted: 10/03/11 10:12 AM ET Updated: 12/03/11 05:12 AM ET

NEWPORT, Pa. -- Officials say a bear attacked a couple inside their central Pennsylvania home, sending both people to a hospital.

Pennsylvania Game Commission spokesman Jerry Feaser says the attack happened Monday morning in Oliver Township. He says the couple's dog was outside and ran into the home, followed by the bear.

Feaser says the man inside the home was scratched and bitten and a woman was attacked as she tried to chase the animal away.

Emergency dispatchers say both were taken to Harrisburg Hospital with unspecified injuries.

State police in Newport directed inquiries to the Pennsylvania Game Commission.

Oliver Township is near Newport in largely rural Perry County, about 20 miles northwest of Harrisburg.

That's why you need a cat, to chase bears away.

The bear chased the dog into the house, what else is new? Hope the people are soon to be ok, I bet the bear was alarmed. Just goes to show, the more people move into vast area's, the more they need to learn how to deal with the life already there.

Nonsense, people, the bear was just trying to get in bed under the covers and get warm. Stop projecting your own fears onto the poor bear!

Its the time of year where food has run out. No more berries or ant pupae or grubs. Its getting on time for them to den, and those that haven't yet are hungry.

If a bear breaks into a home, the occupants should have the right to defend themselves. But please, people, do yourselves a favor and dispose of your garbage properly so hungry bears aren't enticed.

I live in the northwoods of Wisconsin, and my game cameras show more bear than deer. I get turkeys, coons, crows, squirrels, grouse, and everything thats in the woods, but its ALLWAYS more bear. One camera is fourty yards from the cabin, and the other is 30. THATS PRETTY CLOSE to my wife, I, and the siberian huskies. Too many bears up here. May be time for bear stew soon, permit or no permit.

I used to live in the woods, and also had all the critters. When I live in the woods, I am in THEIR territory, not the other way around.

yes. i live in the woods, and i have adapted to it. no bears here, but plenty of other wildlife. it is a blessing and a curse to live in this kind of environment. we just respect the nature part of it, and also keep our doggies safe. we have some nasty possims and raccoons. (although, the racoons have grown on me). we have snapping turtles that can go 4 ft. but, hey we live on their lake in their woods and i respect that.

I have grizzly tracks on my pickup 2 weeks ago near yellowstone park. we were with about 200 campers. he climbed up on my 4 wheeler which was in the back of my 3/4 ton and ate my emergency peanut bar. i'm diabetic. Yellowstone people are complaining that the change in climate is killing the white bark pine that the bears feed on in the fall. it never occures to them that perhaps there are more griz than the habitat can support. IT'S THE DAMN BEARS EATING ALL OF THE WHITE BARK CONES SO THE TREES CAN'T REPRODUCE. these people have college degrees and are paid good salaries to protect the animals of the forest but they can't see the forest because of all of the trees.

I have been to Yellowstone, and there are signs EVERYWHERE about not leaving food outside. The peanut bar is why the bear was there. Lock it up inside your vehicle next time, and he won't be able to smell it.

Carpenter Aunt
I hope you enjoyed your trip to the park. I can remember seeing 50 bears on one afternoon drive. I am well aware of leaving food accessable to bears. I even had one in my dads car years ago. We live so close we often drive to Old Faithful just for an icecream cone.

The fact is that the bears recovery has been so sucessful that the habitat is saturated and they are staking territories outside the park. Two weeks ago an archery hunter, outside the park, was mauled less than 7 miles from where I was. This summer one person was killed and eaten on the Mary Lake trail and another was mauled seriously in a different area.

I have spent many days in the park remote areas via saddle horse and pack horse. I am aware of the dangers from bears. We do not stop to pet them or even take their pictures from a distance like so many of the tourists. You can't even imagine the will power it takes not to run when you are close to a bear and he has you in his sights. Think about that. I would feel so much safer when they invent pepper spray with a range of about 75 yards as opposed to the 15 foot range that is available now. Like I read in a story about WWII, "Only the laundry would know how afraid you would be in that situation." Best wishes, be careful.

The dog runs into the house, followed by the bear, and then barks out;

"You skin that one, and I'll go catch us another one!" lol.

Hope the people are OK.

Leviticus 26:22-24, The Holy Bible... "I will also send wild beasts among you, which shall rob you of your children, and destroy your cattle, and make you few in number; and your highways shall be desolate. 23. And if ye will not be reformed by me by these things, but will walk contrary unto me; 24. Then will I also walk contrary unto you, and will punish you yet seven times for your sins." CONSEQUENCES OF BREAKING THE LAW OF GOD. SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT--I RECOMMEND READING THE BIBLE--... WE ARE ALL IN PRETTY TOUGH SHAPE IF WE DO NOT ACCEPT CHRIST, AND THE FORGIVENESS OF GOD, AND ASK HIM FOR IT... IT GETS WORSE...

i was out in aspen spring skiing a few years ago (didn't work out too well as i suffered a torn ACL, that ice is nasty), but the hotel we were staying in had a heated pool that was right off the mountain top. one night i saw bears IN the pool. i was hobbling around the courtyard and alerted the security guards. i wasn't scared, because these bears were having the time of their lives. i was told that the bears do this every spring, swimming, dumpster diving etc. he told me that residents do not deal with their trash, garbage etc. and that draws down the bears. well, the dumpsters outside of the restaurants in this resort were overloaded with discarded food. go figure.

You got that right!
Being right but dead.....where does that get you?
A tombstone I guess.
I guess they could put on the tombstone......

Is it okay to shoot a bear that enters your home? or do you get cited for that?
01:58 PM on 10/03/2011
Well, are you gonna stand there in front of a bear that has entered your home....that could attack and kill you....and worry about whether you'd get cited for killing it??
I guess you could not kill it and let it kill you....then you wouldn't take the risk of getting cited.

LOL, if I have a sawed off shotgun which I don't I would shoot the bear to kingdom come. Hopefully I would have gotten it on the first shot. You know they have Peta and other animal rights groups that might not see it that way. I love animals, but i value my life and other humans more if they are not barbarians.

Helen, Catlyn has it right. Best way to think of it is you have to be alive to be prosecuted. Last I heard, it is still legal to defend yourself (also family) from a deadly threat, whether it be 2 legged or 4. Whatever it is, if it breaks in your door, it's not a social call.

It may not be a social call :) but if it's a two legged one and you eliminate it. You have to prove that your life was truly in danger and you risk being removed from you house in handcuffs. It's not fair but someone i know learned it in a shooting class. So just feign a heart attack so they take you out by ambulance rather than handcuffs.
