Beyond The Battlefield: How Pride And Love Helped Tyler Southern Overcome The Wounds Of War (VIDEO)

First Posted: 10/10/11 12:03 PM ET Updated: 10/11/11 01:19 PM ET

July 4, 2010, was a bad day for Tyler Southern. He dreamed he was with his older brothers, playing sandlot football, running and laughing, horsing around just like they used to when they were together as kids in Jacksonville, Fla.

In his dream, he was whole again.

Then he awoke in his hospital bed at the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Md., and reality came flooding back. Both of his legs and his right arm were gone, blown off in Afghanistan two months earlier by an improvised explosive device so powerful that only bits of his legs and boots were ever found. The explosion left one remaining limb, his left arm, broken and mangled.

Continue reading his inspiring full story here.

What an amazing young man. His parents did an outstanding job raising him. May he always have such an upbeat attitude. It would be great to continue to see his progress through the years. Bless him and his family.

So when is our involvement in this war going to end so we won't have to see any more stories like this one?

Umm, I don't remember Afghanistan being a war based on lies and deceipt. Was it not Bin Laden from Afghanistan who blew up the Twin Towers? We had NO right to go there and fight? It has clearly gone on too long, but it was a just decision to go there. We just have no stomach anymore for just going in, getting it done and getting out. The rules of engagement have changed and it is not to our benefit. My son served in Iraq twice and fortunately came home intact. This young man and the woman in his life are amazing. Bravo to him and a long, healthy and good life is wished for them.

Read this story of human triump and a beautiful wedding day then read the article about the Kardashian girl's wedding....absolutely distinguishes between love and real committment and the lame Kardashians and their antics and publicity-seeking hangers-on! Some people should be ashamed to be mentioned in the press at all. This soldier and his beautiful, humane bride are examples of what marriage SHOULD be!! Congrats and God's love to Tyler and his bride.

i wanted to say something but afte reading your couldn't think of anything more beautiful. wish there were more people like this brave man his beautiful loving wife and all our service men. May God bless them all

God Bless you, Tyler, and all of our service personnel, wounded or not. This should serve as inspiration or motivation, or produce a guilty conscience, in all those who say they can't work because of, say -- an infected hangnail, perhaps? Limbs don't make the man. You have set an almost-unattainable bar for the rest of us, but I have no doubt that you will surpass it yourself.

bush, cheney, rumsfield and that whole
outfit knew young people would die and
be mutlilated by their insistance on a
war based on lies and decit yet they
proceeded despite a Worldwide outcry.

This young man will be mutiliated for life
yet Bush, Cheney, Rumsfield and the rest
of those pathetic monsters are living a
luxurious retirment at taxpayer expense.

How do they sleep at night?
01:21 PM on 10/10/2011
EXACTLY...
01:33 PM on 10/10/2011
They sleep at night the same way Obama sleeps at night.
01:54 PM on 10/10/2011
Actually, Bush served in the military, Obama has only ever served himself. I wish they would change the laws that to be able to run for office you should have to meet two qualifications, one, have been in the military and two ran a business. So tired of these "career politicians" making decisions on such important things, especially since they only get elected by lying and being charasmatic.

A true lesson in optimism and perserverance and making the most out of a bad situation. People wake up every day and whine about not feeling good, make excuses to not give their all, or even to feel sorry for themselves...this young man is a brave example to all of us that life can hand you lemons or catastrophic situations...what counts is how you react, respond, your choices are to fail or to exceed...this guy is a WINNER and can teach all of us lessons. May GOD bless and keep him for his bravery, his attitude, his optimism and determination.

Well said ..... faved.

I am proud to share the title of Marine with this young man. I am truly glad to see that the military has come so far in attitude from the days of my service that servicemen and women who suffer catastrophic injuries such as these are now allowed to continue serving. Thank you for serving. I wish you a long and successful career in the Corps. Semper Fi, Devil Dog!

He was wounded for nothing. The propaganda is all about 'protecting' people. Getting mangled didn't protect anyone from an explosive device thousands of miles away. I'm glad he's getting his life back together but getting wounded hasn't changed anything in this country. Once again Hate mailers will NOT be responded to.
01:07 PM on 10/10/2011
No hate here. I just want to let you know I disagree with your view that these American military personnel are not protecting anyone with their service and sacrifices. While our military heroically serve in far off lands, our enemies cannot focus their attention directly on our homeland. We will never be able to completely rid the world of these terrorists, but we can direct their focus elsewhere, and we can put a real hurt on them while we are doing that. I appreciate their courage and sacrifices, and hope Southern is able to live a normal, happy life. From a retired Army soldier, I say, Semper Fi to Southerland and his fellow Marines, and thank you to all our American servicemen and women. Hoowah!!!
01:20 PM on 10/10/2011
The argument can also be made that while thousands of our military are overseas fighting un unwinnable "war", they could be here focusing their attention on our security.

Oh for heaven's sake, this story isn't about you and your feelings about the war. It's about survival of a young man who believed in a cause and was willing to risk his life in support of that belief. He was NOT wounded for nothing...he believes he is protecting the rights and safety of all Americans, including you, and he was willing to lay his life on the line in that belief. If you feel so strongly against the war, then put your beliefs on the line...what have you done to get us out of Afghanistan?
01:39 PM on 10/10/2011
I so agree it doesnt matter what your believes are you should just say thank you for serving our country and stop complaining. He stood for what he believed in and for that you should be thankful.

Yes it's about me because we're all supposed to give this man a freakin' medal for getting blasted to pieces and my feeling is, that what happened to him didn't save or prevent anything. It's a shame he lost what he did for no good reason. Tough if you don't like it when someone won't kiss soldier ass which, thankfully, no one has lost yet. I'm glad he survived! But I don't admire him for losing what he did. He didn't make the world safer or more protected. Of course he believes the propaganda of protecting rights and safety. But last I checked, politicians give and, until they're taken away by them, our rights. Police protect our safety. Citizens protecting themselves from criminals are in charge of their safety. The war propaganda brainwashes so many. I don't have to put anything on the line and get myself blown to bits or shot up for anyone and I'm entitled to be anti-war. I've written Obama about getting our guys out now several times and he's ignored me just as I've written him about penalizing people who he wants medical insurance to be forced on. So, why don't YOU start trying to do something, Michasmom? If I had political clout you bet I'd go to Afghanistan and pull people out. But I don't. Do you have the political clout to go there? I'd be there with you.
