BELLEVUE, Wash. -- The mother of a missing Washington state toddler didn't run out of gas on the day her son disappeared - a discovery that contradicts what she has previously told investigators, police said Wednesday.

Julia Biryukova has told police that her 2-year-old son, Sky Metalwala, vanished Sunday in Bellevue when she left him sleeping alone in her unlocked car after it ran out of gas. She and her 4-year-old daughter walked to get gas, she said, and when they returned an hour later, the boy was gone.

But investigators have found that there was enough gas in the car to run a considerable distance, Bellevue police Maj. Mike Johnson said Wednesday afternoon. Police haven't ruled out some other mechanical problem with the car.

Investigators continue to receive tips from the public - but none has been helpful to the investigation - including a few people wondering if there could be a connection to a TV show aired Saturday, the day before Sky was reported missing.

An episode of "Law and Order: Special Victims Unit" about a missing child was "strikingly similar in nature" to this real-life mystery, Johnson said.

He has repeatedly asserted that Biryukova, or someone close to her, knows his fate, but no one is speaking up, even as hope for finding him alive fades.

"The public, I'm sure, is as frustrated as we are in the fact that mom isn't willing to come in and provide a polygraph," he told a news conference. "To be quite honest, that looks suspicious and we're puzzled by that."

Johnson said Biryukova's story has become less and less plausible as police have tried and failed to find any evidence that supports the facts as she presented them.

He emphasized, however, that Biryukova remains cooperative in other ways, by answering every police question through her attorney, driving police along the route she drove and then walked, and allowing complete access to her home and car.

"We want to believe Julia. We want to help her find her missing child," Johnson said.

Johnson revealed that Biryukova said she was taking the boy to a hospital because he didn't feel well - even though she left her purse, wallet and identification at home. It wasn't clear how she expected to get gas for the car or have her son treated without the items, he said.

Sky's disappearance came amid a bitter divorce and custody fight between Biryukova and the boy's father, Solomon Metalwala. During a tough mediation session that lasted about 12 hours last week, the parties reached a tentative agreement that would allow Metalwala to have some visitation with Sky and his older sister.

But two days later - and two days before she reported her son missing - Biryukova decided to pull out of the agreement, Metalwala's divorce attorney, D. Michael Tomkins, said Wednesday. In a letter sent by her attorney, Biryukova insisted that everyone at the mediation session had been against her and the settlement was unfair, Tomkins said.

The children didn't attend the marathon session, and it's possible they were left home alone for the entire time - raising the possibility that Sky could have become dehydrated, Tomkins said.

Papers filed in the divorce say that Biryukova suffered from "severe" obsessive-compulsive disorder. Metalwala wrote in a declaration that she would frequently go on 10-hour cleaning binges during which she wouldn't even feed the children, but a doctor reported that her diagnosis did not interfere with her ability to care for the kids.

Johnson said Biryukova acknowledged having a history of leaving the children home alone for extended periods of time. Police know whether she did so during the lengthy mediation - but they won't release that information, Johnson said.

Investigators on Wednesday were focusing on processing the car for forensic evidence. They also were giving voluntary polygraph exams to the boy's father and several of his relatives and taking DNA samples to match with DNA evidence found at Biryukova's apartment.

10 hour marathon cleaning sessions in which during that time she wouldn't feed the children but the Dr. states that it doesn't interfere with her ability to care for the children???????

She needs to be locked in jail just for leaving the boy alone in the car!! Why on earth would anyone do such a thing?? I hope the city has enough sense to take the oldest child away from her!!

Seems like a majority of these child killing cases involve the mother but the courts grant all the power to the mother in a divorce much like this case. Watch - http://tinyurl.com/75pv85f

Good point. Even good husbands are short-handed in divorces cases wrt to their children custody and visitation rights. I am glad that you fairly point a point in the interests of fathers also.

As missing toodler's mother was originally was from Russia, could it be possible she was a mail order bride that you see in many ads. If so, her husband's trying to teach her "his" ways may have been so controlling that she felt nothing she did was good enough which caused her behavior. These men quite often pick these women so they can dominate them. Maybe nothing was good enough in his eyes. Basically, in the divorce papers, it was only he the court heard about how unfit she was. She may have been so far gone emotionally by the time her psych evaulation was done the her diagnose may have been incorrect. As having had a husband like that I can relate to her and feel more attention needs to be done on the husband,

Police should see if they can determine if she watched the L&O episode the night before, and assume she followed it.

Seems like a majority of these child killing cases involve the mother but the courts grant all the power to the mother in a divorce much like this case. Fathers are always left holding the bag. Should be 50/50 and no child support for either unless there is serious abuse involved. If a mother makes false charges against a dad in the divorce like its normal practice now, make it a crime subject to no visitation with your child for minimum 5 years and mandatory jail for 10 years.

Facts to date: Bitter custody battle, mom OCD, might have to grant visitation rights to Dad. L&O episode night before about fake kid disappearance, won't take polygraph (sure, stick up for your civil rights but not if it can focus cops on looking for someone else,) says she's out of gas but plenty of gas in tank, says going to ER but no purse/papers, leaves 2 year old alone unlocked in car because he's sleeping (felony right there.) Sigh, cops just looking for the body now, or as one poster suggested she parked the kid with a pal, let's hope. I sure hope the older sister is safe.
Even bigger problem: BBC ran an article on how come America has such a huge child abuse problem. America used to be the most kid-friendly society in human history.

My opinion: Can't tell you, it wouldn't be 'politically correct.' God forbid I offend the non-productive morons who claim to dictate what and how we are supposed to think. (Hint: Common sense.)

She needs to be locked up for leaving both kids alone...period. no exceptions, she has already admitted to "cleaning for 10 hours and neglecting to feed them..I am sick of all these mother's who do these unspeakable acts to their children. They can not be human and do this to their kids,Mothers have a biological uncontrollable need to care for their kids and nurture them. It happens the minute the babies are born,I can not even call these criminals human.I just can not wrap my brain around this stuff!

Oh yeah, because the father is ALWAYS innocent....
07:50 PM on 11/14/2011
And then mothers like me (who try to do everything right to the best of their ability) lose the kids to an abusive father. It's sick no matter how you look at it.

It saddens me to read yet another article about another missing child. There is much suspicion to be placed on the mother. Any female out there, mother or not does not leave the house unless they have their wallet and purse/pocketbook with them. I've been married twice and know a bit about a woman's habits. If in the car & driving, they will stop, turn around and go back and retrieve what they forgot to begin with. This woman's accountability of what happened to her child & the events leading up to his disappearance should be seriously questioned, if not doubted. Law enforcement needs a strong arm here, and use it to lean on her to the point where she either cooperates fully or they charge her with obstruction of justice. This woman is by no means a victim here...the innocent and missing boy is. It is now up to state police to turn up the heat and use any lawful means necessary to obtain the information that this woman is obviously hiding from them. If there is someone out there who is keeping young Sky "on ice" until this thing blows over, they too are contributing to obstructing justice. Maybe the mother has an ulterior motive to take the child out of country, and she's in the process of getting necessary documents ready for when the time is right. Authorities should look to see if the child has a passport, or if one has recently been applied for.

Good point about the possibility of the mother/or someone obtaining a passport and the child leaving the country. Also too, the boy looks exactly like his father. Often times when women divorce they are so resentful they may take it out on the child that most resembles the father, in addition to hurting the father/spouse through lack of visitation.

Question why is no one asking the four year old girl what really happened? Don't they have child psychologists who can tell when a childs lying? Poor baby =( its really unfortunate that idiots like this got to even keep their children after such blatant neglect as leaving him in a car for 55 minutes in freezing temperatures? Just makes me sick to my stomach!

They actually have interviewed the girl. Not much came out of it though, they got useful information. It is said that the mom may also be putting nonsense into the girl's head as well which could lead to even more troubles.

The daughter was interviewed, no help.

I would like proof that the boy was in the car on Sunday.

This woman is just too dumb, not to have done it. She had all the motive in the world. But, her reasons, and excuses are too far fetched to believe.

It's suspicious to me, as to why the police in all of these missing child cases are being so lenient on the suspects. It makes sense to focus on the parent/s, because they are the last ones who have either seen on been with the child. Why, and how, do they have the right to refuse a polygraft. If your child is missing, you should be willing to do anything, and everything possible to locate that child. That is why so much suspicion is thrown on these people. As well it should be.
