Thanksgiving At Best Buy: Workers Rebel Against Early Black Friday Openings, Shortened Holiday

In yet another sign of worker frustration over a shortened Thanksgiving holiday, an employee at a Best Buy in Tampa has launched a petition against his employer's decision to open earlier for the Black Friday shopping spree this year, claiming the midnight opening time will eat into workers' holiday time with their families.

The petition on Change.org, attributed to 8-year Best Buy veteran Rick Melaragni, comes on the heels of a similar, high-profile petition launched last week by a Target employee in Nebraska. The latter petition has racked up more than 150,000 signatures.

Melaragni, who works as a Geek Squad technician, told HuffPost that he and his Best Buy co-workers were "blindsided" by the company's decision to open doors earlier this year for the crush.

"Of course, everyone was upset," said Melaragni, a 25-year-old Boston native. "We thought we had higher standards than other retailers. And customers are telling us the exact same thing. If they want a good deal, they're missing out on Thanksgiving, too," since they'll have to get on line on Thanksgiving Day to beat the crowds.

The petition, which has around 8,000 signatures as of this posting, reads in part: "A full holiday with family is not just for the elite of this nation -- all Americans should be able to break bread with loved ones and get a good night's rest on Thanksgiving!"

Minnesota-based Best Buy appears to be merely getting in line with the rest of the retail world with its early start time. Although most big-box stores have traditionally opened in the wee hours of Black Friday, several have moved their times up to midnight or even late Thanksgiving Day. Walmart will be opening at 10 p.m. this year -- the earliest its stores have ever opened.

Kelly Groehler, a BestBuy spokeswoman, noted that CEO Brian Dunn, once a store employee himself, "fully appreciates" the feelings of Melaragni and others, adding that Dunn will miss much of the holiday himself as he helps stores in Minnesota gear up for Black Friday. In a statement on the matter, the company said, "This year, customers have told us -- and our competitors -- that they plan to shop on Thanksgiving Day, and earlier than ever on Black Friday. We therefore made the difficult decision to move our opening Black Friday to midnight. We know this decision changes Thanksgiving plans for some of our employees, and we empathize with those who are affected."

Although retailers say they're simply responding to consumers' desires, the shift has managed to annoy many employees and consumers alike. Some shoppers told The New York Times last week that they will forgo the bargains this year as a manner of protest, feeling the retailers have overstepped their bounds and broken an unspoken holiday agreement.

Like Best Buy, Target has moved its opening time up to midnight, requiring some employees to arrive as early as at 11 p.m. of Thanksgiving day. In a statement posted on The Consumerist, a Target spokesperson said the company would be paying workers a higher holiday wage, adding that management "does our best to work around the schedules of all of our team members, making every effort to accommodate their requests."

Melaragni said that some Best Buy employees will have to come in as early as 8 or 9 p.m. on Thanksgiving, since they'll be setting up a viewing of a Harry Potter movie for the eager shoppers waiting outside the store.

Melaragni himself has been scheduled to come in at 7 a.m. on the morning of Black Friday, and is spending Thanksgiving with family in Florida. But he said he's offered to switch shifts with any co-workers scheduled to come in Thanksgiving night who have children they'd rather spend the holiday with.

"There are some [co-workers] who say, 'I'm just thankful to have a job,' " Melaragni said. "And I am, too. But there's a line that you don't cross."

I agree with everyone else about greed destroying the fabric of the american family. Thanks to insatiable greed for material goods, I have no idea what it's like to have a nice family, and therefore do not have any understanding of family values.

The target (pre-black friday) 4 day ad came in the paper today my house exploded into a greed fueled frenzy. Immediately, my parents spiraled into a hate-hate relationship and divorced. I consequently became addicted to marijuanna, then moved onto harder drugs like crack cocaine, and dropped out of college. BOTH of my sisters now have children out of wedlock. They have no idea who their baby daddies are. My dog died.

I can only imagine what is going to happen on black friday...

I think the Best Buy employees should stop "bitching" and take a look at the people that are coming in to spend their hard earned "welfare checks & food stamps just so you BB employees have a job that they don't want...

This is meant in the "sick humor vane" so don't reply unless you think it's funny/true/fitting/applies/ or wish you wrote it...

Probably more poignant to protest work conditions and restart all the OWS movements, from customers to employees alike.

Or, y'know, do nothing about it.

What about Boycotting? what about employees going on strike? I know not all employees can do this economically, but some can. Make it simple. Do not shop at Best Buy, Walmart or Target anymore.

This is pretty repugnant. Dunn's sympathetic words come from a person who has no capacity to feel sympathy. He's a psychopath and is only concerned about money over the well-being of his employees. He probably doesn't even care about losing Thanksgiving time with his family because he doesn't have the capacity to understand emotional bonds and certainly can't understand those bonds in others.

Do you know what would draw me into a store on a "black friday" if anything would? If they opened at their normal time, let employees actually have Thanksgiving off, and try to sell themselves as different instead of this race to be the same but MORE!

The black Friday phenomenon rose organically because it made a sort of sense. People had the day off to do some shopping, so then we got sales, then we got early-bird sales, and now we have insanity so that a thousand people can line up to get one of 5 cheap TVs the shop has on hand. By law, I believe they only have to have ONE item at the advertised price. It's better called Bait and Switch Friday, anyway.

Okay okay... I retract or at least walk back the "psychopath" comments. I do, however, think that it's a pretty "inside the box" way of thinking. Everyone opens early, why not open *later* and advertise how important you believe it is to allow employees to enjoy thanksgiving with their families and then add, "And we hope you do the same. We don't want you to spend thanks giving evening away from your family just to take advantage of the savings we're offering. So, take your time, enjoy the time that you have with your family, and then come in and see us during our normal hours." I don't know if that would work, and, yeah, that first draft is a little pandering... and maybe no one cares about a nice face anymore... but I think it would be worth a shot.

Why does anyone even buy at Best Buy? Amazon has a vast selection at lower prices with free shipping, not to mention a liberal return policy.

i remember as a child the biggest high life of xmas other then xmas day was the day after thanksgiving,..... that was family putting up the xmas tree and hanging xmas lites as a family. we as people have lost the since and value of family and xmas, we have allowed greed of materials and money to divide what is rite and wrong, just to be able to say this is what i got and see what i bought. the purpose of life is teaching the values of life to generations to generations, what i see on a everyday bases is that there is no respect to your neighbor, how many of you that read this comment can say that you have wittness the younger generation be so disrespectful to a stranger for no reason, what is nice about the mama and papa owned busniess is that your treated the same way that they want to be treated, the value of respect is given the first time based morals and not on money.the true moral of what i have said is friday after thanksgiving is for family not for the business man,why cant they have black friday on saturday when there is more people out there that can shop that day cause they are not at work and they have an extra paycheck, but the biggest thing is that family can start being a family again.!!!!!!!

Have never been a fan of Black Friday, I think it's wrong and grossly manipulative. If there's something I really want that badly and I have the funds, I'm ok with paying a few extra bucks a few days later when saner minds prevail. What really sealed the deal for me was the year that a security guard was literally trampled to death when the doors were opened at 4AM.

Have a law that any store cannot open until 8 am ...stores are just trying to open earlier than their competition to get the sale ...the sad thing is that we Americans get the low paid retail jobs , the items we buy are all made in China who have replaced all our manufacturing jobs .....and we don't seem to care
12:17 PM on 11/20/2011
Should that law be applied to Fast Food workers? Doctors? Cops? firemen? gas Station attendents or all the other folks that have to work on Turkey day? Stop whining and get to work!
05:30 PM on 11/20/2011
You could "immigrat" to China get a job & "make big bucks" like the Chinese workers do...
06:41 PM on 11/20/2011
Wish you could spell ...... but the manufacturing jobs that have left this country were good paying jobs ..... the Chinese workers are paid poorly , but they also have several workers doing what one American would do also we would not like to live in the conditions they do [ may be you would ].......it is the Corporations management that make the decision to have their products made overseas to use their low labor rates so it is their choice to outsource our jobs not the Chinese .I wonder if 'bfrank' works for min pay ?

I can't stand this pushing up of Christmas every year. The radio station in my area that plays Christmas music started playing it the day after Halloween, some people already have their decorations up, and my grocery store will be open regular hours on Thanksgiving, meaning that the employees will not be able to spend any time with their families. Two years ago, my mother and I spent Thanksgiving at Hooter's as they don't close on Thanksgiving and my daughter had to work. So instead of having turkey and stuffing, we had hot wings and peel and eat shrimp. As far as I'm concerned some things are sacred and Thanksgiving and Christmas are two of those things. I hate how the retailers and corporations have ruined what use to be two wonderful holidays.

I'm torn on this issue. The brick & morter stores are fighting a battle with the economy and unfair advantages of online mega-retailers, so they use these gimmicky 1-day events to garner free advertisement and possibly more sales...so they can continue to stay open the rest of the year and employ those people complaining about the hours that unemployed people may be happy to take.
But on the other hand, if you can sell a PS3 bundle for $199 at Midnight the Friday after Thanksgiving, why can't you sell it at noon on Tuesday four days later? Instead of Black Friday, call it Wacky Wednesday or Deal-thirsty Thursday. The retailers created Black Friday, they can create another day, offer the same 1-time deals and be done with it.

Now that makes sense to me.
