Mound Of Tires In South Carolina Visible From Space, Could Result In Jail Time (PHOTOS)

Mound Of Tires

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - The sprawling pile of hundreds of thousands of tires isn't easy to spot from the ground, sitting in a rural South Carolina clearing accessible by only a circuitous dirt path that winds through thick patches of trees. No one knows how all those tires got there, or when.

But, Calhoun County Council Chairman David Summers says of this giant rubber menace, "You can see it from space."

Authorities have charged one person in connection with the mess of roughly 250,000 tires, which covers more than 50 acres on satellite images. And now a Florida company is helping haul it all away.

Litter control officer Boyce Till said he contacted the local sheriff and state health department, which is investigating who had been dumping the tires. But the worst possible penalty that could be imposed locally? A single $475 ticket for littering.

Records show the property is owned by Michael Keitt Jr. of Far Rockaway, N.Y.

A phone number for Keitt could not be found, but local officials said the man was one of several heirs to the property, all of whom live out of state.

As part of the state Department of Health and Environmental Control's case, a state grand jury issued indictments against George Fontella Brown, 39, of Easley, on three charges of violating the state's solid waste act, according to DHEC spokesman Adam Myrick. Those state charges carry much heftier possible penalties, including thousands of dollars in fines and up to a year in jail.

Myrick would not discuss details of the case against Brown, and a spokesman for state Attorney General Alan Wilson did not respond to messages. No working phone listing could be found for Brown, who also faces similar charges in Greenville and Orangeburg counties, and court records did not list an attorney for him.

Tire dumping has historically been a problem in Calhoun County and other rural areas, said Summers, who recalled another giant tire pile in the 1990s that would dwarf the current monstrosity.

"This tire pile here is a baby compared to what that one was," said Summers, who previously worked for a company that ended up shredding those used tires.

South Carolina retailers charge motorists $2 for every new tire they buy, which helps pay for the cleanup and recycling of old tires. But Summers said many tires never make it to recycling plants, instead being discarded and growing into gargantuan piles.

For now, a Jacksonville, Fla.-based tire processing company is working to clear the pile.

Tricia Johnson, owner of Lee Tire Company, Inc., said a property owner whom she declined to name called her for help hauling off the material. So far, Johnson said between 10 and 15 tractor-trailer loads of tires have been shipped to her Florida facility. There, they will either have oil and steel extracted from them, or they will be shredded and made into tire-derived fuel, which Johnson said burns more cleanly than coal and is used by paper mills.

Johnson said she has waived her usual fee and is charging the property owner only for transportation costs. She hopes to have all 250,000 tires processed by early 2012.

"He had good intentions," Johnson said of the man who called and asked for her help. "He is trying to clean it up. He just got stuck. He tried all the resources to move the tires as quickly as he could."

There's black gold in them there hills! I like how the property owner got charged a fee by the recycling company. The company will make a tidy profit selling the ground up tires, plus whatever they charged to haul them away.If they had any decency, there would have not been a fee...

It can be seen from space ? Not by the naked eye !

Using satellite cameras is a diffrent story. The military has satellite capability to make out the rank on a soldiers shoulder epullet .

Everytime I hear some nonsense about being seen from space I laugh because I can use Google Earth and see my house from space.

Granted - 250,000 tires are a lot of tires. But the pile doesn't cover 50 acres and it isn't visible from space. Shame on Huffington Post and other online sources for just regurgitating this story from the Associated Press. Why sensationalize this story?
A quick check using information and tools that are available to anyone on the Internet indicates the following:
1. the Calhoun County GIS mapping site shows that Mr. Keitt's property is listed at 21.2 acres. Even if the tires covered his entire property, the pile wouldn't exceed 21.2 acres.
2. using Google Earth, I found the pile of tires in the northeast corner of the property. A rough measurement of the shows the pile is closer to 1 acre than 50 acres. A size range of 1 to 2 acres would be reasonable.
3. the pile of tires is barely visible at an altitude of 30,000 feet - the view one would get from a commercial airplane. This is easily replicated using Google Earth and increasing the estimated eye altitude (shown in the lower right hand corner of the screen).

thats a crock once again the EPA has its nose where it doesnt belong even though they department of health says its doing it you can bet the stupid epa is behimd i say leave this person alone and let him burn the tires not all at once but over a period of time ask yourself this how come you never see the local health departments going after landlords or citiies that are very nasty and dirty or you never see them tring to help the homless to stay clean funny isnt it how they say churches should do that but not them

You are joking aren't you? Do you have any idea of the amounts of pollution burning 250,000 tires would release into the environment? You blast the EPA for what reason I do not know. Perhaps you do not remember the times before environmental protections. Do you want to return to the days when the river running through Cleveland literally caught on fire? By the way, it is very difficult to understand your writing without punctuation marks.

OMG dont tell this story to Newt Gingrich or he'll suggest that we pull all of the elementary students out of school and force them to earn a living by cleaning this mess up.
04:55 AM on 11/22/2011
Ashton, YOU are an idiot, or you can't read. The speaker said nothing of the kind. Giving a young person a chance to EARN some cash is hardly forcing them to earn a living. THAT is the parents obligation. And if they can't provide that living, they have no business forcing others to do it. And, that IS being forced now.
Grow up, allow yourself and others to be responsible.

You are ignorant, therefore you are a Liberal. I have worked as a hiring manager for a number of companies and have always had good kids that are going to school, under 18, looking for part-time work come in and apply. They are eagar to work and have fexible schedules and are always available on weekends. Bottom line is anyone under 18 is too much of a hassle legally for an employer so they are turned away. (you even see this trend in fast food resturants) If you would pay attention to what Newt was talking about was that there are few jobs for teens anymore, he was specificly speaking regarding inner city youth that had no opportunity to make money in their neighborhood other than crime or selling drugs. What is wrong for a kid to go to school, work in the school as a janitor or whatever to earn money to further their education? Only a Liberal can find a problem with that.

This is too much! No one could see this many tires on earth, but they can be spotted out in space and as a result, someone's in trouble. What Next? Hope they never develop anything and put out to space that can see the miniscule wrong doings. Imagine how many people would be ticketed or arrested and upon being approached and while trying to get out of it say, "how did you know, I was all by myself when I did it! Well, we were watching the earth rotate and we just happen to see you. The earth marked by a bunch of tires seen from space. Be Blessed and have a wonderful Thanksgiving. This article was remarkable, but then I am considered old and it does not take much now a days.

you bet its remarkable to have that many tires!

Any relation to Laurence Keitt?
Keitt was censured by the House in 1856 for aiding Rep. Preston S. Brooks in his caning attack on Sen. Charles Sumner
