ATLANTA -- Police officers shot and killed a woman in an Atlanta home when she didn't comply with orders to stop stabbing her young daughter, who also died, authorities said Monday.
Police and fire rescue personnel were called to the home Monday afternoon and were told an 8-year-old boy had been assaulted by his mother and thrown out a window, said an Atlanta Police spokesman, Maj. Keith Meadows.
Meadows said witnesses told officers the mother was alone inside the home with her young daughter. He said officers entered the house and found the mother sitting in a chair, stabbing the child.
Two officers drew their service weapons and ordered the woman to drop a knife, firing at her when she did not comply, Meadows said. He said between 10 and 16 shots were fired.
Police spokesman Carlos Campos said the stabbing victim was dead at the scene, while the 8-year-old boy was hospitalized in stable condition with apparently minor injuries. Police said they did not know if the daughter had been struck by a bullet, and did not know a motive for the attacks on the children.
Campos said the officers involved in the shooting will be placed on a routine administrative leave during the investigation.
Neighbor Lela Smith told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution that the family had lived in the home about a year and a half. She said the child who died was nearly 5 years old.
The mother's name was not immediately released.

I also can't say enough how horrible I feel for the policemen who were forced to do this. Obviously, they didn't make this decision lightly but now they have to live with this memory too. It's just so tragic.
1. They must issue a warning to drop the weapon and surrender.
2. They must eliminate the threat if the suspect refuses.
These officers complied and did what they were trained to do. It's just sad that it was too late for the little girl.
There is no such thing as some idyllic past (usually associated with 1950's America) where everyone looked like Leave It To Beaver or Father Knows Best. It was an illusion then and it's an illusion now.
"A shot to the stomach would have accomplished
the stated mission. Why didn't they simply walk over to
her and overpower her? Even if she had a knife in her
hand, I think a man twice her size could have outsmarted
her and knocked the knife out of her hand or managed to
get ahold of her wrists. And to shoot her while she is
apparently holding down a child? Doesn't that also
endanger the child?"
really????
A gun is used as a last resort if someones life is in danger. I love how people like you assume cops can just "shoot to wound" . Guns are used by LEO to end a threat by ending someones life.
Cops also have what is called a "15 ft rule" when it comes to knifes. google some images of what happens when a knife gets used on someone...pretty horrifying.
They did this child a favor, he was never going to see his mother again anyway for what she was doing. Saved his life by not waiting and walking over to her to "disarm" her while he got stabbed a few more times and died.
Dont assume anything about the use of firearms until you have been in a situation like that. When a split second determins the life of someone and your adreneline is going chosing a shot is VERY hard to do.
I am beyond ecstatic they they killed her. And for anyone saying the cops had no right to shoot her, I would do the same damn thing in a heartbeat.
Our children are our legacy, not our demise.
