ATLANTA -- Police officers shot and killed a woman in an Atlanta home when she didn't comply with orders to stop stabbing her young daughter, who also died, authorities said Monday.

Police and fire rescue personnel were called to the home Monday afternoon and were told an 8-year-old boy had been assaulted by his mother and thrown out a window, said an Atlanta Police spokesman, Maj. Keith Meadows.

Meadows said witnesses told officers the mother was alone inside the home with her young daughter. He said officers entered the house and found the mother sitting in a chair, stabbing the child.

Two officers drew their service weapons and ordered the woman to drop a knife, firing at her when she did not comply, Meadows said. He said between 10 and 16 shots were fired.

Police spokesman Carlos Campos said the stabbing victim was dead at the scene, while the 8-year-old boy was hospitalized in stable condition with apparently minor injuries. Police said they did not know if the daughter had been struck by a bullet, and did not know a motive for the attacks on the children.

Campos said the officers involved in the shooting will be placed on a routine administrative leave during the investigation.

Neighbor Lela Smith told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution that the family had lived in the home about a year and a half. She said the child who died was nearly 5 years old.

The mother's name was not immediately released.

i hope everybody keeps these family members and police officers in their hearts. i feel very bad that they had to see sumfin like that and know it has to be even harder if they have children of their own. hopefully they know how wonderful they are for the decisions they have to make and maybe one day they can be at peace wif what they had to deal wif. my heart goes out to everybody involdved in this horrific situation. and once again i hope that stupit b that could do that do such beautiful helpless beings suffers for eternity and a day

i cant understand wtf is wrong wif people. i keep reading these articles and cant stop crying for the poor helpless children that shouldve been shown nuffin but love and care and had somebody there to protect them. im sorry if the mother went insane or if thats what she wouldve pleaded jus to get put in a hospital n than released right away but f her and her soul. i hope she suffers for eternity. i find it hard to believe somebody jus snaps wif no prior warning signs whatsoever. i cant understand why people believe in such a higher power and praise him n he lets this happen.

I know this family and can tell you they have been suffering (like many others) for years. I can't believe such a beautiful little girl is gone and now the brother who loved her so much has to live with this memory. His four uncles will be sure to look out for him but I know it will be a long road to heal for him. Just keep him and his uncle who was also attacked in your good thoughts, prayers or whatever you believe. They need it all right now.

I also can't say enough how horrible I feel for the policemen who were forced to do this. Obviously, they didn't make this decision lightly but now they have to live with this memory too. It's just so tragic.

I know this family and am saddened by this. They have had one heartache after another for years. It is terrible what happened to the little one and she was precious. What I feel bad about now, is her brother who she attacked and the older child who is very bright and witnessed this. She has had her struggles for years but nothing like this. Her brothers are devastated and now left with heartache.

When a police officer witnesses someone harming another with a weapon they MUST follow procedure.
1. They must issue a warning to drop the weapon and surrender.
2. They must eliminate the threat if the suspect refuses.

These officers complied and did what they were trained to do. It's just sad that it was too late for the little girl.

I would have done the same thing!!! I can't imagine what the little girl went thru. God Bless her brother. I really hope he has some very loving and caring family members to help him cope. If not, I will gladly give him a loving home.

He has 3 brothers and they have been through a terrible 7 year stretch. This family has been though a lot and now the boy has to live with this as well as losing the sister he loved. Your words are appreciated.

10 to 16 shots?!?! Do those officers ever go to a shooting range?? Talk about overkill.
01:27 AM on 11/30/2011
I heard that and wondered if she was on some kind of drugs that it would have taken that many shots to stop her.
02:14 AM on 11/30/2011
she threw her 8 year old out a window and stabbed her 4 yr old to death.if it was 100 shots to stop a next stab to the child, so be it.no sympathy to anyone but the children involved and the police for the administrative leave.
11:14 PM on 11/29/2011
I am sure the officers couldn't believe what they were seeing, and thus drawing their weapons and ordering her to drop the knife was instinctive training response. As far as shooting her multiple times, people think a person immediately stops when shot, that isn't always the case unless a brain or spinal shot is perfectly placed. The poor children..God knows what was wrong with the mother I know everyone is rightly upset about the little ones, but obviously she must have lost her mind and her life as well..as for the officers, may they find peace, for being able to sleep without terrible nightmares is likely going to be difficult,if not impossible for a while, maybe a long time..hope they know they did all they could in a horrible situation for anyone to be in..

Well for sure, you are safe no where. Not even with your parents. There once was a time when mothers would die protecting their child. These days, she is the very one killing them. I have never heard so much child killings going on .. Damned cowards that would harm a child or an animal. I'ts useless to say much , because this goes on all the time now and all we do is come on the computer and post a comment that means nothing to the well being of this nation that is going to hell quicker than you can throw an ice cube in a stove. Mindless, senseless brutality. Now our children have no safe haven. Homes are a war zone. Dad and mom on crack. Sad! Lights are on, but no one is home.

Actually, infanticide is not that unusual historically or culturally. People snap. People go crazy.

There is no such thing as some idyllic past (usually associated with 1950's America) where everyone looked like Leave It To Beaver or Father Knows Best. It was an illusion then and it's an illusion now.
12:36 AM on 11/30/2011
You are so right .. They snap? Go crazy? Why is it always the little ones that are at the end of that snap? That craziness? Crazy or not, i'm so glad she is DEAD. In a very bizarre, yet humane way to look at it, if this is the life that child was destined to live, its best they are at peace. I lived it. Witnessed it. I know the dire consequences of an unstable existence and what it does to those brought into this world that has to carry on that torch of life when everything feels half lit. One thing is for sure. You are right in saying what a farce the icons of the day even in the 50's brought to life. Exaggeration at its greatest. Thank you.

I just wanted to say that people like you are angels straight from heaven. Specially made to help these pitiful children. It breaks my heart to read this type of stuff, but yet it amazes me that parents/people like this actually exist. I read this story last night and have cried all night. I havent slept a minute thinking about these kids. And about the 4 year old boy that was beaten to death on his birthday. I wish I could do alot more to help these kids. I wish I could open not only my heart but my home up to shelter them and keep them safe. Show them what being loved and cared about is like. Kudos to you guys and remember, you are a very special group of people that has a reserved spot with the big guy himself. Love to you all :)

Thank you for commenting and for your compliment. I hate to read news stories like this too. I find it very disturbing and heartbreaking. I don’t understand why or how someone could harm a child. There is no reason or excuse for it. You are a very special person too! Thank God for people like you who care about children!

According to a recent congressional hearing in Washington, June 2011, Experts now believe as many as 10 children die each day from child abuse or neglect in US. Over the past 10 years, more than 20,000 American children are believed to have been killed in their own homes by family members. That is nearly four times the number of US soldiers killed in Iraq and Afghanistan. In the United States, nearly 10 children die each day from abuse. Yet, unlike cancer and many other diseases, abuse is a willful act and 100% preventable through education and law enforcement. TO SABRA:

"A shot to the stomach would have accomplished
the stated mission. Why didn't they simply walk over to
her and overpower her? Even if she had a knife in her
hand, I think a man twice her size could have outsmarted
her and knocked the knife out of her hand or managed to
get ahold of her wrists. And to shoot her while she is
apparently holding down a child? Doesn't that also
endanger the child?"

really????

A gun is used as a last resort if someones life is in danger. I love how people like you assume cops can just "shoot to wound" . Guns are used by LEO to end a threat by ending someones life.

Cops also have what is called a "15 ft rule" when it comes to knifes. google some images of what happens when a knife gets used on someone...pretty horrifying.

They did this child a favor, he was never going to see his mother again anyway for what she was doing. Saved his life by not waiting and walking over to her to "disarm" her while he got stabbed a few more times and died.

Dont assume anything about the use of firearms until you have been in a situation like that. When a split second determins the life of someone and your adreneline is going chosing a shot is VERY hard to do.
06:19 PM on 11/29/2011
You do not understand how dangerous a knife is, nor do you understand what a deranged person is capable of. A person with a knife is serious about inflicting death, usually one with a gun is merely threatening death. The officers if they woud have approached her would have been injured. Why lose good trained officers? they were right to stand back and shoot. But, you are welcome to become a P.O. and then tell us all about how it should be done. PS yes, virginia, I have been there
07:27 PM on 11/29/2011
That "really" saying is dying off and sounds stupid when used by anyone over 12.
04:29 PM on 11/29/2011
I cannot find the right words to express how angry I am about this story.
I am beyond ecstatic they they killed her. And for anyone saying the cops had no right to shoot her, I would do the same damn thing in a heartbeat.
Our children are our legacy, not our demise.
02:46 PM on 11/30/2011
Beyond ecstatic? You don't know her, yet you pass judgement on her like you did. I knew her and even though she had her problems, it's not an "ecstatic" emotion when I think of another human dying. Her daughter was precious and now her son and 4 brothers are left to mourn her. Have respect!
