Anthony Miranda Tried Robbing Ultimate Fighting Champion: Police

First Posted: 12/05/11 01:18 PM ET Updated: 12/06/11 10:55 AM ET

Bond was set at $350,000 Sunday for a convicted felon who chose the wrong victim on Chicago's Southwest Side this weekend: an ultimate fighter and martial arts expert.

The Chicago Sun-Times reports that Anthony Miranda approached a parked vehicle near 55th Street and Kenneth Avenue Friday night and asked the driver for a lighter before pointing a handgun at the man and demanding money. After the driver handed over some cash, Miranda reportedly ordered him out of the car -- which was apparently a mistake.

Chicago Police Officer John Mirabelli told the Sun-Times what happened next:

At some point, Miranda's attention was diverted and the victim was able to grab control of the gun and the two wrestled.

During the fight, Miranda accidentally discharged his gun, shooting himself in the ankle, Mirabelli said.

The victim was then able to pin down Miranda until police arrived, Fox Chicago reports. He told officers he was a martial arts expert and ultimate fighting champion. Miranda was taken to Holy Cross Hospital with a "face full of lacerations," two black eyes and a gunshot wound.

Miranda, 24, was charged with armed robbery and aggravated discharge of a firearm. He was ordered held on $350,000 bond Sunday, according to the Cook County Sheriff's Office.

There are gyms in the Illinois area where some top fighters train. I wonder who the victim was.

He got greedy. The guy gave him the money but he still told him to get out of car. Maybe to carjack or something. I think he probably feels even worse thinking about that- that he actually robbed the guy but wanted more and got it hehehehe

Wow. Things are crazy down there. I would have to agree that guns are more of a problem than a solution to a problem.
When are you guys going to build the fence. This fence should divide the country to protect people of different political ideologies.

Hmm, then why is one of the most dangerous cities in the Western world--Juarez--parked next to one of the safest cities in America (El Paso)? Don't believe me? El Paso and San Jose, CA have rotated in this respective rank for cities of their size.
Curious on what you mean by political ideologies. 'Of'...or 'from' those ideologies?
Incidentally, we're too busy bankrupting our Treasury in Afghanistan to fortify said border.

Crazy Canuck -

I disagree with your assertion about guns. Do you know how many police reports are filed each year in the US where people defend themselves with a firearm? According to the DoJ (not the NRA or any pro-Second Amendment group), an average of just over *60,000* reports per year. And according to the DoJ, what is the #1 weapon of choice for criminals? If you said "guns", you are very wrong; it's hands and feet, followed by clubs/bats and then knives.

With the US being a melting pot and the slums where drug use and violent crime are rampant, people need to be able to defend themselves. Crime in areas where people are not allowed to own firearms are always much higher than other areas (even neighboring areas) where private citizens are allowed to own firearms.

Our media does a *huge* disservice to their audience by sensationalizing any crime where a firearm is used - it creates a false image where guns are used constantly. Firearms are used more often for self-defense than to commit crimes, the facts bear that out. TV shows and the "news" will show people what sells rather than reality.

I do not impune your integrity; I understand why you feel that guns are a problem with the media constantly feeding people the sensationality that sells rather than what is really going on. But please realize that media (including the "news") sells what is thrilling, not the facts.

Come to think of it, this could have been my husband he waits for the day that he can pull his weapon out and hold the person until the police come!

"Gun control" means using both hands. People wouldn't be so quick to rob, rape, & murder if the person they were about to assault could possibly have a .45 tucked inside his jacket. Second Amendment for all legal citizens without rap sheets.

Having said that, this clown who tried to jack the cage fighter got what he had coming. Too bad he didn't have his arms broken as a constant reminder of what happens when you mess with the wrong person.

Seems like the "victim" did just fine defending himself WITHOUT a firearm. In fact, it strikes me that the person that had a gun wound up shooting himself with it. Certainly I'm not against guns or gun ownership (own several myself), but this sure seems to be a strange article to pick to try and jam hyper pro-gun views down people's throats.

Reply to Miz Fit:

It is folks like you that are turning this country into such a joke.

You and all your cronies are called 'idealists' - the thought you suggest above sounds nice, but it is utterly impossible that this would happen…and the criminals would find plenty of other deadly options.

Those of us who will vote in the major change, in 2013, that will bring this country back to being great again are called 'Realists'. We work towards outcomes that are achievable…and recognize that the world is not fair and will never be fair.

Suggestion: check into emigrating to Greenland. The folks there think much like you; you would be right at home.

...destroy all guns in existence, MF?.... you are an idiot!!!

What was great prior to 2008? Two wars? An approaching depression? Businesses fleeing to China? An inept president who spent more time in Texas than at work? Yeah, "realists" know how to run a country right.

By the way, what "outcomes" did the republicans reach for, never mind achieve, during the past decade?

By passing on a dozen opportunities to take out Bin Laden, Clinton allowed 9/11 to happen. Bush inherited that mess. I agree it was overkill to send in ground troops, but nowadays, we have to pander to you liberal PC athiests. We never had the chance to enjoy 4 or 8 years of conservative prosperity because Bush pandered to the left during both terms. Sandy Berger was caught stealing the 'Able-Danger' documents for the LoC that proved every bit of this...and the BS 9/11 commission promptly stopped their 'investigation' and determined everyone had some blame. Remember how they were demanding that Cheney and Bush be tried??? How quickly that all ended when the truth came out....CLINTON OWNS 9/11.

Obama sued Citibank in Chicago....forcing them to give sub-prime loans to slackers....and setting legal precedent for the economy's collapse. This was based on Carter's CRA Act of '77. He didn't inherit this mess, he caused it.

Ted Kennedy chided conservatives to pass his immigration act in '65....stating it would not flood communities with illegal aliens and overwhelm the taxpayer's infrastructure.

I can't think of one single Democrat that has held office since the 20th century that hasn't played a key part in ruining this nation.

Bush was no conservative...bash him all you want. But the days of blaming him for the economy and wars are OVER.
