Susan Powell's Husband Says In-Laws Have 'Irrational Vendetta' Against Him

The husband of missing Utah mom Susan Cox Powell is accusing his wife's parents of turning the couple's children against him.

Two years ago this week, Susan, then 28, disappeared. Now her husband claims his in-laws, Chuck and Judy Cox, have an "irrational vendetta" against him.

"The Coxes are coaching my sons in ways that are clearly intended to destroy our loving relationships as a natural family unit," Josh Powell wrote in a court declaration that he filed Monday in Pierce County, Wash.

"By living in the Cox house, the boys are exposed to the Coxes' overwhelming attitude of hatred toward me and it is seriously traumatizing my children," he wrote. "There is considerable evidence that the Coxes make explicit comments to and around my sons reflecting their attitude."

  • Father Kills Sons And Self

Pierce County sheriff's deputies and Graham firefighters work through the wreckage of a home in Graham, Wash. where the bodies of Josh Powell and his two sons were found on Feb. 5, 2012 in a double-homicide suicide. The boys had just been brought by a Child Protective Services worker to Powell's home for a supervised visit when police say the dad deliberately blew up the house. A judge had denied the previous week a request by Powell to regain custody of his sons, who had been living with the parents of his missing wife, Susan.

  • Pierce County sheriff's officials said it appears Josh Powell used an accelerant to increase the power of a gas fire that he intentionally set to kill himself and his two sons inside his Graham, Wash., home on Feb. 5, 2012. The saga of the Powell family began in 2009 when Josh Powell reported that his wife, Susan, had gone missing. That night he claimed he took his sons on an overnight camping trip in freezing temperatures.

Powell is asking the court to place the two boys, ages 4 and 6, with a neutral guardian. He said that by being with his in-laws, his sons "are caught in the middle of a very hostile war of words and emotions."

Susan Powell's parents have had custody of the children since September. Judge Kathryn Nelson placed the children with the Cox family after Josh Powell's father, Steve Powell, was charged with voyeurism and possession of child pornography. The children had previously been living with their father in Steve Powell's home.

Steve Powell has pleaded not guilty to 14 charges of voyeurism and one of possession of child pornography. He remains jailed on $200,000 bail.

Susan Powell was reported missing by her family on Dec. 7, 2009, when she failed to show up for her job as a stockbroker at Wells Fargo Financial. Josh Powell told police he had been camping with the children, and that he had last seen his wife around midnight.

Suspicious of Josh Powell's story, investigators named him a "person of interest" in his wife's disappearance. Several search warrants were served, including one to draw biological samples from him. Police also impounded the family van.

No one has been charged in Susan Powell's disappearance, and police say the case remains an active investigation.

Since his wife's disappearance, Powell, who still wears his wedding ring, has claimed his wife suffered from mental illness and plotted her own disappearance.

More recently, in July, Steve Powell announced that he planned to publish his daughter-in-law's private journal online. He told NBC's "Today" show he had 2,000 pages of journals that Susan Powell allegedly kept before she went missing.

"People don't know that there are two distinct sides of Susan. She was very ... kind of an open person in a sexual way ... with the opposite sex," Powell said on the show.

Steve Powell was arrested on the child pornography charges roughly two months later.

Susan's parents have always defended their daughter in the press and have made it clear they suspect foul play in her disappearance. In regard to Josh Powell's most recent allegations -- that they are interfering with the relationship he has with his children -- they are unable to comment, according to their attorney, Anne Bremner.

"My clients are under a court order in the family law case not to discuss the matter," Bremner told The Huffington Post.

She added: "I can say that the boys are in a loving and safe home."

I can not believe how stupid people are when they read ONE article about a subject then start making comments without reading all the facts behind the case. If those people that have siad "I hope the grandparents aren't doing this, that's wrong, they shouldn't take the kids from him, etc." had read the entire article, or the history behind this case, they would know that the father was found with multiple sites and pictures of child porn on his computer, as was his father. That's why they are in jail right now. Even if he didn't kill her (which either his father or he DID do), he is guilty of a heinous crime, and doesn't need custody of children. His father is guilty of so much possession of child porn that it's unreal and family members state that is why is son has this demeanor and attitude. I wouldn't want my grandchildren around ANYONE that liked to get off looking at naked children or exploiting them sexually in any way, would you??? I would be especially worried if he was a father of two small children and his wife was suddenly missing, with a story in which he took the children camping in 20 degree weather when she disappered. That's what is wrong with our country, we accept too much evil and allow it to happen all in the name of this liberal mindset that is poisoning our world.

Liberal mindset? Most molesters I have read about would fit more aptly into the right wing authoritarian, Do as I say, not as I do crowd.
02:51 PM on 12/12/2011
greytunes, I think pjtruth's comment about the liberal mindset was referring to those that allow this sort of thing to continue (ie, the liberal justice system), not the perpetrators themselves. Big difference. And since when has there been any kind of research supporting your view that the "right wing authoritarian" would be more apt to commit this sort of crime than some other sterotyped group?

I really would hope the grandparents aren't doing this (being a grandparent myself), kids NEVER want to hear that one of their parents could ever bring harm to another, as i'm sure its very hard for the grandparents not to have an opinion and verbalize it, i think of OJ's kids often in this type of situation, its doesn't do anyone any good, especially children to try to persuade how they should feel, all kids should love and trust both parents, as children get older they will make their own decisions, without the help of others, leave them be and let them form their own opinions and if they choose to feel, its not their parent's fault - then let it be.....

Who, What, Where and how. Once you get the answers to these questions you will find out what happened. Until then you can't just point a finger as someone and assume they did something bad. A lot of people just want to go away and start a new and don't care about what is left behind.

If her husband really did abuse her I wouldn't call it strange, just being scared. But if I had been in that situation I'd take my kids with me. Just saying.

When there is a divorce or worse it is difficult to keep your opinion to yourself. But for the sake of the children, don't say things in front of them. They are half this person too and it will come back to haunt you. The children naturally love their father, that is a bond that they need in their life. The truth will come out someday when the children are ready to hear it and understand it. This is something that cannot be rushed. Sad for the children.

Don't you think that her facial features represent a photo of a Jane Doe that Huff. Post reported yesterday? They have no info. on this Jane Doe except her facial reconstruction. What happened to dental records? Either way I believe there is a resemblance in bone structure (compared to photo yesterday 12/8/11). Could they be the same person? Asking law enforcement to check out and respond. Thank You. Interested reader.

No doubt these two young children are caught in a one side mess. It states "Susan Powell's Husband Says In-Laws Have 'Irrational Vendetta' Against Him" Does he hate the parents as much as they hate him? Because he is charged with “voyeurism” and “possession of child pornography“, these children are at risk living with him and would exposed to the same hatred as he is charging against the his in-laws. Thus, what I see is that “HE” is the one with vendetta and wants to hurt the in-laws by trying to remove the children from their care and run up legal bills. I wonder who is paying his attorneys? I also wonder what attorney would what his case?……………

He didn't get charged with those crimes- that's his father. He is however, suspected of killing his wife, the kid's mother, but there isn't enough to charge him.

That guy belongs behind bars,..not running his mouth so viciously constantly about his missing wife & her family. I guess they would have a vendetta against him, & there's NOTHING IRRATIONAL ABOUT IT!!! The children should never visit their father, except in an observed visitation setting,...since it is obvious that he has killed one family member aalready,...& it was the one he chose & vowed to spend the rest of his life with!!

You don't value our system which does not accuse someone until there is some evidence? You'd just toss him in jail with no evidence? WTF?
09:45 PM on 12/13/2011
They do have evidence, just not enough. Otherwise he would not be their main suspect. Second, any guy that likes to watch kid porn should be put away for just that. This guy is a creep, and there is a ton of evidence for that.

The grandfather and the father were both arrested for child porn. That is enough to keep the children away from both of them for life. The husband was not arrested for murdering his wife, although from the circumstantial evidence it was either him or his father. The grandfather wrote love songs for the daughter in law and has stated that she was flirting with him. And yes the grandfather was a peeping Tom with his neighbors watching them undress? And he had a plethora of child porn on his computer. Both men are perverts and perhaps pedophiles. The children should never ever be allowed with them alone.
