FREMONT, Calif. -- Federal officials have issued a warning to a California man who has been donating cups of his sperm to women who want kids.

Trent Arsenault says he got three women pregnant last month, a record for the 36-year-old Fremont father of 14 - and counting.

Arsenault says he considered donating through sperm banks, which offer money and donor anonymity. But he decided to give it away in sterile cups so he could meet the future parents.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has now told Arsenault he's facing a $100,000 fine or up to a year in prison for ignoring federal regulations requiring blood tests to screen for communicable diseases.

I understand the FDA's oversight and position. This type of behavior is unsafe for the mother and the fetus. What if this man has an std or hidden in his DNA is the potential for diabetes, down syndrome, or host of other unforeseeable problems for the fetus and the mother? The established protocols should not be side-stepped, they must be met for the sake of all concerned. For example, his ancestral history should be checked, his current medical, mental and physical issues must be scrutinized. While it is understood that any conventional sexual encounter could have negative effects, the method employed here is not conventional, he is offering a service to the public and it must be monitored.

Every guy who goes out to a bar on the weekends is a potential DIY donor. The delivery method might be a bit different but that's just a technicality.
11:25 AM on 12/20/2011
Agreed. if this guy wants to give away cups of man batter to women in need, I dont see how the federal government has any right to interfere. Good lord what a nanny state/police state we have become where a man sperm must be registered before he can give it away. I am pretty sure the women involved have asked for std tests and a medical history, and if they havent and the baby comes out messed up then too bad for them. Do your homework and stop expecting the federal government to solve your problems for you.

And live in a messed up country! Wonder who would honestly contribute for the betterment of his own country, which is going down the drain with unconcerned people's mentality. To each his own, hah!

"...the baby comes out messed up then too bad for them" ???

Your sympathy for the infant born diseased or disabled is touching, really touching, guy.

I don't see a problem with it. If all parties want to accept the risk, then so be it.

they're can't be one or any legitimate grounds for charging anyone for this. they are just mad that this takes people out of paying all kinds of money to them for it. they have no authority over decisions like these. they are entirely up to the people involved to make and the moment they start trying to enforce this i ,myself will start protesting the entire reform of our government because it has already gotten way out of control and it keeps getting worse. the government has gone too far trying to tell us what we can or can't do in our lives , when no one is hurt or harmed and there are no victims.... too many victimless crimes for a so called free society.

I agree with you 10,000%.

do what
11:32 PM on 12/19/2011
They just are mad that they aren't able to charge money for his 'product'. Someone did claim that an earlier article stated that he had given medical records. Even if they didnt, what is the matter with this. If you do not know their medical history... u know the chances you are taking. Isn't that the chances you take when you have sexual relations. you can get HPV from any guy and there is NO test as of yet to tell if a man is carrying it.
The women know the risk... and they still take it ... I think the government just has their hand in too much only cuz they aren't able to have their hand on any money for this transaction.

This is troublesome. He COULD be transmitting STD's! That's like donating your blood without having it tested! Body fluids are body fluids!
12:57 AM on 12/20/2011
Can't you read? He's already fathered 14 and counting....if he was spreading disease it would be known....he's already passed nature's test....the fed's can suck it !!!

Sooner or later, if he's a carrier, it will come up. Feds just protect citizen. You really suck!!

Well now wait a minute. He could sleep with those women and there's nothing they could do, so what's different, except they don't have sex? Same exchange of fluid, just not as fun. All he has to do is say by law, you have to have sex with me??

I know of a number of guys who donate. Their anker [sic] babies seem to work out well for the mothers.
10:12 PM on 12/19/2011
Earlier articles about this man identified numerous records he provides to the recipients. He provides them with his family medical history and the results of his full blood workups and std tests that he has every six months. He also provides them with his diet--all organic, no pesticides, no hormones, etc. He has stated that he chooses everything he consumes very carefully in order to provide "healthy" sperm to recipients. I see nothing illegal about his generosity.

Who would take a cup of sperm from a stranger especially without testing and put it anywhere near their body. WTF? Who aer these women?
10:26 PM on 12/19/2011
The same ones who get pregnant during one night stands.
