Most Interesting Floating Hotels Worldwide (PHOTOS)

First Posted: 09/23/11 09:29 AM ET Updated: 12/21/11 01:58 PM ET

In a world of chain hotels and boutiques so ubiquitous they no longer merit the term, a hotel floating on the water is still a rarity.

A few intrepid hoteliers have set out for the seas, refitting old yachts, retooling old barges and making the most of their host cities' waterfronts. But some boat hotels go beyond just a cruise ship that never sets sail.

In New York City, an art installation in Jamaica Bay could be the coolest hotel in town, floating or otherwise. And in Sweden, a little cabin on the lake gives way to an underwater chamber that gives guests the feeling of sleeping in a fishbowl.

Nantucket Lightship

A decommissioned lightship -- a craft designed to act as a floating lighthouse -- the Nantucket has been refurbished with mahogany- and cherry-paneled interiors and can now be chartered as a vacation rental in the Northeast, operating out of Martha's Vineyard, Nantucket, Newport and New York City.

The best floating hotel I was ever on was a princess cruise.
The only way to travel, in my opinion.

Congradulations AOL on buying the huff post, now we can look forward to dull news and bs articles I guess. I can see changes already that I don't like, so I suggest, if you want to get your 350m dollars worth, don't go changing stuff. as the saying goes, "if it ain't broke, don't fix it".........

I will keep my feet planted on good old dry land. Don't see anything that is worth spending hard earned money on in any of the photos. I like a nice Hotel much better and can do more, rather then on water.

There are these amazing things called "cruise ships" that are luxury afloat in the water that these are unable to compare with.

There is usually a very good reason why some people build "tree houses" that are anywhere between 20' to 40' up on "stilts". same with "floating hotels" well, maybe not so. just remember, there is a reason for the mosqueto netting in those tropical islands.

I can see it now, outside of the ships, You wake up, turn about to sit up in your bed, the immediate sensation you get when you put your feet onto the floor to discover your knees in water that is rising with the tide as the "hut" hotel you have rented is either sinking or the water is rising. and the hotel staff has already abandoned the place. Not to mention the shark that just swam by your bed.... Seems I remember huts in the South Pacific that had some height on pilings because of the tides. and others because of the "night" visitors.

I would recommend La Becasina in Tigre, Argentina. It is a very nice hotel with individual cabanas in the middle of a delta. It is all inclusive and only accessible by boat. It is about a 90 minute cruise from Buenos Aires. Lots of fun activities and amazing food. Very romantic and eco friendly as all water is rain water.

Hey, Huff, why do you call these "floating" hotels when they are on piers?

Floating hotels? Really? Except for the ships, there are no floating hotels. They all sit on pylons. If they were truly floating, they'd be sitting on the water with no support under them. I know, it's nitpicking, but all too many serious issues get the same kind of misleading headlines just for the sensationalism.

Interesting show. Of course some of these were not floating. If one were to include 'hotels' on pilings there are many more. I guess that cruise ships could also be included. If any publication wants a journalist/photographer to cover these, I'm at your beck and call (on your dollar, of course--my dollar isn't worth much anymore). I can be reached at John (at) TravelWritingAndPhotography (dot) com. Cheers, John
