Jack Persyn, Georgia Middle School Student, Suspended For Reporting He Accidentally Brought Knife To School (VIDEO)

Knife

Jack Persyn, 13, was in chess club before class when he discovered a short knife in the bag he brought to his Georgia school, station WXIA reports.

Persyn's aunt had bought the bag from a yard sale, and gave the purchase to the teen without checking inside first, the Atlanta-Journal Constitution reports. After Persyn told his Lanier Middle School teacher that he accidentally brought the weapon to class, the teen received four days of in-school suspension, a punishment his father Bill Persyn says is excessive.

"There was never a safety issue," Persyn told WXIA. "No harm was done. It was a genuine honest mistake, yet he got pulled out of class for four days. I can see a one-hour detention if they had to do something, but this is nonsensical."

AJC's reporter Maureen Downey contacted the Gwinnett schools, and received this statement from director of media relations Jorge Quintana:

"Gwinnett County Public Schools does not have a zero-tolerance policy. We look at situations individually and take appropriate disciplinary action. While we are not at liberty to confirm or discuss the discipline this young man faces, we know our administrators followed procedures as stated in the Student Conduct Code.

The rules call for more severe action against those students who do not self-report weapons they have in their possession. It’s important to understand that these rules are in place, in part, to prevent future incidents and rule violations. Without these rules in place, others could easily claim they were not aware of what they had in their possession."

According to a report by WFIE, the knife measured 1.5 inches long.

These white people think they should have special treatment. If this was a black kid, this story would have been on the news and the child probably would have ended up in a youth detention center.
02:42 PM on 01/11/2012
But if it was a black kid he would have never told anybody because he brought it to school on purpose to stab somebody.
02:43 PM on 01/11/2012
And you know that you dont even want to compare back schools to white ones. Im sure thats my fault somehow though...

so basically they're punishing the boy for doing the right thing? What they are teaching him is it is better to simply keep his mouth shut and ignore the rules. It was an honest mistake, he came forward & took responsibility & all the school is doing is making him regret his actions. Schools can be the most power hungry people at times.

a 1.5 inch knife is legal for him to carry to school.... http://georgiapacking.org/GaCode/?title=16&chapter=11§ion=127.1

the blade was less than 2 inches

Whether you are innocent or not, you may not be safe.

If this kid said nothing he never would have got in to trouble. The school didn't even know he had a knife. What this teaches is honesty is not the best policy and keep your mouth shut nothing good will come of it.

It's sheer stupidity to punish a kid when he comes forward & admits an honest mistake (especially when no one was harmed). It's sending the wrong message. My wife & I have both taught in the schools and found it very difficult dealing with asinine people in charge that have infiltrated our schools since that late 60's & early 70's. It's these people that need to be punished or fired.

"It's not mine, honestly; my friend must had put in I there" Isn't that what they all say- maybe this kid was telling the true, but then again maybe all of them are. Four day ISS, will not be a big deal for the kid. He got off easy for actually having a weapon in his bag.

When my son was in third grade and I forgot to put his homework back in his bag after I checked it, the teacher told me; "he still has to fave the consequences - it's his responsibility" we have lived by that ever since; your property is your responsibility.

did you pass engrish?
10:27 PM on 01/09/2012
Sorry I never took "engrish", but maybe you and I both need a new spell check - LOL!
12:09 AM on 01/10/2012
under GA law a 1.5 inch knife is not a weapon in a school zone.
10:42 AM on 01/10/2012
I don't believe this story ever said it was a violation of Georgia Law. The story I read said it was a violation of school rules. There's a difference.

Yes, a valuable life's lesson has been taught to this child indeed. Even though the child was honest about the mistake and nobody was hurt, the state punishes him like any other common criminal. What kind of society have we made, where there are only absolutes and no chance of EVER being forgiven for making an honest mistake? I'll tell you what kind. He has learned exactly what kind of person that the state wants him to become...submissive, fearful, powerless and at their total control. This is exactly the conditioning of our children that these policies are intended to produce. Think about it.

Calling B.S. on your comment, Memeless. Whether an accident or not, the kid had a weapon. It was good that he was honest and therefore that's why he only received 4 days ISS instead of being totally ousted. He wasn't punished like a common criminal, he was actually given a less severe punishment BECAUSE of his honesty. After all the huge problems with students bringing weapons and USING them, teachers are scared s**tless of their students. I am as anti-government as you, but this has to do with the teacher having so little control in the classroom anymore due to over-bearing administrations and under-educated parents not the state creating "submissive, fearful, powerless" students.
10:06 PM on 01/09/2012
You, klkroeger, are one of those people that has been brainwashed in the system that memeless is talking about. This kid did ABSOLUTELY NOTHING WRONG and not only should he have not been punished, but he should have been told that what he did was admirable. After this, he will most likely think twice about being honest next time. He needs to know that telling the truth is always the right thing to do and that he will be treated fairly in doing so. Putting children in this kind of situation can lead them down a very dangerous path. You, and those who think like you, make this a very difficult world to live in.
09:06 AM on 01/10/2012
you are truly a mind numbed fearful little person. Honesty should always be rewarded. A blanket policy is very often not the right thing. Each incident should be looked at, the character the person involved should be examined. OH, but wait, that would mean we have to actually say one kid has proven to choose to behave badly and the other actually is a good kid.

Skeetertn..........You walk on water don't you?

As an ex-educational administrator, I am embarrassed by their stupidity. Smart leaders would have never done this. I can only hope there's more to this story than reported. Please tell us the kid wasn't really in the chess club, that he was a thug that had a bad history. Was he also in the A/V Club and the choir and a student assistant?

"We look at situations individually and take appropriate disciplinary action." Have you lost your senses?
07:36 PM on 01/09/2012
The punishment was beyond reasonable; in school suspension allowed him to complete his work without affecting his grades and attendance. It was his bag and his responsibility for the contents in it. I commend young Mr. Persyn for doing the right thing by reporting himself knowing there would be consequences. I teach my children to take responsibility for their actions even if those actions bring punishment, so I plan on using his excellent example with my kids.
07:34 PM on 01/09/2012
iSN'T IN SCHOOL SUSPENSION A WAY FOR THE SCHOOL DIST. TO STILL GET THE FED AND OR STATE MONEY FOR THE KID SHOWING UP TO SCHOOL, AS HE WON'T BE MARKED ABSENT, SO THEY STILL GET PAID FOR HIM BEING THERE....AND HE GETS SQUAT FOR AND EDUCATION FOR 4 DAYS AND A GOOD LESSON IN NOT TO BEING HONEST OR TAKING OWNERSHIP ABOUT HIS MISTAKES.
10:02 PM on 01/09/2012
You make a good point. Any kid who see's what's going on is going to think twice about being honest the next time they find they 'accidently' brought a knife to school. These kinds of rules and punishments are ridiculous, especially if the kid turns it him himself and the knife is that small. There are kids who have been thrown out of school for small plastic toy knives that are less than a half inch long that would bend if they hit your skin. This kind of extreme thinking doesn't help anyone. All it does is perpetuate the paranoia parade that the wimpy no tolerance crybabies started years ago.
11:59 PM on 01/09/2012
I THINK IF THEY CAN'T REVERSE THE SUSPENSION...THE PARENTS SHOULD KEEP HIM HOME.......SO THE SCHOOL DOESN'T GET REWARDED WITH FEDERAL OR STATE MONEY FOR SOME REDICULIOUS RULES....
BY HIM BEING IN SCHOOL.......
07:18 PM on 01/09/2012
we're all going to hell with these kinds of people in charge...can't wait for 12/21/12

I know just how you feel. Hopefully, I'll have my Christmas shopping done even earlier than that this year.

I am surprised that they didn't call the police so he could be pepper sprayed and tasered. Or worse.

The idiot teacher and principal should be given a permanent suspension from having anything to do with children. Typical liberal educators.
