CLEVELAND -- The parents of an 8-year-old boy who died from Hodgkin lymphoma after suffering for months from undiagnosed swollen glands have pleaded guilty to denying him medical treatment.

Monica Hussing, 37, and William Robinson Sr., 40, both of Cleveland, face up to eight years in prison at sentencing. They pleaded guilty Monday to attempted involuntary manslaughter in a last-minute plea deal before their trial was about to begin.

Willie Robinson collapsed at his home on March 22, 2008. Prosecutors say he had begged his parents to take him to see a doctor but was rejected. Hodgkin lymphoma is a highly treatable cancer.

Hussing's attorney, John Luskin, said his client took responsibility in the case but, given her education and background, didn't realize the boy was seriously ill and was treating him with cold medication.

"She is a mother that just did not have the capability to recognize" cancer, Luskin said Wednesday.

Robinson's lawyer, Thomas Rein, called it a "sad, horrific case" that drew him inquiries from the White House as changes to federal health care law were being considered in 2009.

"Had he had regular health coverage, it possibly could have prevented this," Rein said of the boy's death.

Luskin and Rein said the parents had financial problems and tried to get checkups for their children but couldn't afford it.

"The kid had what appeared to be swollen glands," Luskin said. "This was not a tumor that was getting bigger. It would come and go. He would have his good days, he would have his bad days."

Hussing's daughter, Lillian Hussing, said the family didn't have money for medical care when they lived in Warren, tried repeatedly to get help from social services and visited a free clinic but left when told they would have to pay $180.

"We did not know it was cancer," she said. "We tried and tried to get help and were denied every time," said the daughter, who's 18.

The family soon moved to Cleveland and the boy died within weeks.

Prosecutors say that while the boy was suffering, the parents claimed financial hardship but paid $87 to have a pit bull treated for fleas. Luskin said the dog belonged to Hussing's parents and her parents paid for the treatment.

Trumbull County Children Services says it had worked with the family to provide Willie health care, getting involved after receiving a phone call in July 2007. Agency officials said a case worker visited the family at least monthly and pushed the parents to have a medical follow-up on his swollen neck but they didn't.

However, Rein said a social worker who visited the family in January 2008 "indicated the kids were healthy and happy." He said no one knew the boy had cancer until he died and an autopsy was performed.

And Lillian Hussing said a case worker had told the family the boy's lump looked like a swollen gland and to hold off until they could secure financial assistance before getting it checked.

About two weeks after they moved to Cleveland, she said, her brother came down with something. Her mother treated him with cold medicine and he died within three days.

She said the boy never complained about his neck.

"He played, he went outside, he wrestled, he played video games," the boy's sister said. "He was the happiest kid you could imagine. It never seemed like he was suffering."

The emotional aftermath from their son's death led the couple to split, according to Luskin.

The couple's four other children under 18 were placed in the custody of a family member. Luskin said the daughter, upon turning 18, decided to return to live with her mother.

Rein said Robinson agreed to plead guilty so his children could be spared any further grief and wouldn't have to suffer by testifying. Lillian Hussing said her mother took a plea bargain because of the uncertainty of a trial and fear she could be sent to prison for a long time.

As part of the deal, the prosecution agreed to drop four counts each against each parent, including child endangering. Prosecutors didn't agree to a sentence recommendation. Both Luskin and Rein said they hope the judge will consider probation.

"There's not a day my client ... starts without shedding a tear for his son," Rein said.

The coroner ruled that the boy was a victim of medical neglect and died from pneumonia due to Hodgkin lymphoma.

Hodgkin lymphoma is a highly treatable cancer, with as many as 95 percent of patients in early stages of the disease surviving for five years or more with treatment. It's one of the most common forms of cancers among children.

Dr. Stanton L. Gerson, director of the Case Comprehensive Cancer Center at Case Western Reserve University, said parents should watch for glands that are swollen for more than two or three weeks, particularly if accompanied by weight loss and nighttime fevers.

I have to post this comment. My son, 17 years old, is being treated for hodgkins lymphoma. We had no idea he was sick -- he played ultimate frisbee, always had friends over, swam in the pool, played video games. Colds went around the house in early spring, 2011, and his symptoms were no different than any of ours. It wasn't for months later that he told us he was having trouble breathing when he laid on his back. We thought perhaps pneumonia, so took him into his PCP. The tumor in his chest was gigantic, had encircled his windpipe and if we had been but days delayed in taking him to his PCP our son would have died. We are college educated parents -- we are involved in every detail of our sons' lives, his brother is in nursing school, there are numerous nurses and doctors in our family, yet none of us saw a prevalent symptoms. This story gave me chills -- it could very well have happened to my husband and I.

The old saying walk in my shoes before you judge. I think this case is being blown out of the water, before we judge these parents we need to take a look at the health care system in this country. Its ok to say take your kid to the emergency room but unless its really an emergency what treatment would this child have gotten. The emergency room would have looked at him and said take him to his doctor, if he dosen't have insurance what doctor would treat him. How many times do you go to the doctor and see a different doctor.

They took the pit bull for a flea treatment rather than at least taking their son to any number of clinics. Heck, even a lot of drug stores now have an RN in them and are much cheaper than a flea treatment.

And if they took him to an ER, they would have treated him. There are many charities out there specifically designed for cases like this and the hospital will help you look for them.

but the pit bull was the mothers parents dog and the "grandparents" as the article says payed for the treatment.

I am sorry for this child and also sorry for the parents. I blame this tragedy in our very poor medical system. It is clear that if you can't pay medical assistance you die, that's it. There are no doctors, no clinics, no hospitals that really care for human live, all they care for is the money. Shame on them and this government that don't do anything for the people. Our tax money should help with a plan for medical expenses for people that make small salaries and for people that are not employed. SHAME... SHAME...SHAME!!!!

We already have medical care for poor people and it's called medicaid! We people that work hard everyday pay for their health care!

This story is very sad, i really dont know what to think, i just know if it was my child i would be at every hospital, er, doctors office, any place i could think of until i got an answer as to why my child was sick, ill admit family members of mine in the past needed help with medical costs for cancer by the state and were denied, but they tried and tried until they got it, still took their daughter to the hospital, er, everywhere, as a parent you cant give up, id strip, prostitute, anything i had to do if it came to my childs health, they definitely shouldve tried a little harder, im sure if they had tests done and proved it was cancer they wouldve been awarded health care for their son, either way, its just really sad and i hope that poor innocent child is finally at peace.

You can take a kid to the emergency room for acute treatment, yes. But, if you are not financially able to pay for followup visits and treatments then you are left with no recourse but to treat your symptoms as best as you can. My child has insurance, and I still can't afford the co-pays for doctor visits or medications. It's easy to judge these parents as neglectful, however, without money to support medical costs they were left with no options to help their son. Contrary to popular belief doctors don't have a patients best interest at heart unless the patient can pay for services.
09:08 PM on 01/16/2012
I work as a pt advocate in the medical field but I have to disagree with you that physicians don't care unless you have money. I also totally understand the expense of prescriptions and co-pays because I have trouble paying for all of my medications (8) however, if you give up your weekly manicures and pedicures, hair colorings at $100+ every 6 weeks, premium channels on cable and pricey cell phones with all the gadgets then you will find much more money than you know. Our society today is much too selfish and the children are suffering.

If you can be that naive and believe that these parents are innocent, I am sorry but this country is getting dumber by the minute...Any good, loving parent would take their child to the doctors immediately! A caring, loving parent would never wait and "see if the child gets better"
Ever since Casey Anthony got off free and clear , so many children have been killed or gone "missing" if you didn't want kids, then take birth control, it is free in some places, give them up for adoption, there are so many people out there that can not have children that would love them, but no it seems as though this country and our justice system are "saying" that it is "okay" to kill your child or even abuse them.. Bottom line...These so called parents are guilty 100% because they were too stupid to get off the couch and take their child to the hospital, no child should suffer...

Emergency rooms are required by law to treat patients regardless of their ability to pay. This is stated on every wall in the ER. We all make mistakes--being a parent, it comes with the territory--however, we can not make mistakes that place our children at risk. A child's health comes first, above financial status and above the education level of the parents.

The prosecutor is nuts. What good is done by further prosecuting these parents after they made a tragic mistake?
10:30 AM on 01/17/2012
"A tragic mistake" I am dumbfounded by this comment. The drunk driver who killed someone will admit they "made a tragic mistake". Same for the store owner who shot and killed the robber and is now serveing time for that "tragic mistake". Just because you regret a decision afterwards doesnt mean you can get away with it..... Unless your name is Casey Anthony.

Mistake on their part. Terrible mistake. But it seems to me that for something to be a crime you have to have the intention to commit the crime. The fact that they were not physicians and misdiagnosed the problem hardly constitutes an intention to kill the child. If they knew he had a serious illness and was dying and denied care that would be one thing but dismissing what seemed like a prolonged cold is hardly murder. Just tragic.

Colds do not last for months on end. Any parent, regardless of their education, should be able to recognize something is incorrect with their child. If they don't know, then they get it checked out. For a child, you sacrifice yourself if need be. They should have given up paying rent, or the mortgage, for that month and use the funds for medical fees. Or borrow money from the grandparents, since they apparently had enough to treat their dog (but not a beloved grandson?) If you choose to have kids, you need to be smart enough to take care of them appropriately.
04:35 PM on 01/15/2012
You can bet if the parents felt sick for weeks at a time they would have their butt sitting in a waiting room for their doctors appointment. These disgusting people shouldn't even be allowed to keep a parakeet which cleary they can't afford anyway it might cut into their dogs flea treatment budget. Some reason they couldn't have asked the parents for a couple bucks to get their kid to a doctor?
10:43 AM on 01/15/2012
I don't buy it for a minute that they were in a financial hardship. Why? Because they paid $87 to have their dog treated for fleas. Any responsible, caring parent would take their kid to the doctor and wouldn't worry about the dog. Watch - http://tinyurl.com/76j6qs8

Apparently you didnt read the article completely. If you had read it you would have seen the sentence in the same paragraph, stating "the dog belonged to Hussing's parents and her parents paid for the treatment."

I call BS. They said he was happy playing video games! Where was the money to pay for the system and the games? Sell all that crap and get the child to a healthcare facility! Almost all hospitals and related specialties have a charity program for the hospital stays and the clinics attached to their hospitals. Once that child begged to be taken to a doctor, it was most likely too late.

While I agree any prison time won't most likely do a damn thing to help this child, his siblings or the parents, I still feel they are responsible. Parents need to be held accountable somehow. If he was in school where was the intervention there?

I, too wonder why they couldn't get help from the grandparents? If that was even their dog, who the hell knows!? The child is in peace now, but I feel sad for his torment here in his short little life.

I went to school with a boy we were in the fifth grade dozens of of years ago, before the internet. His parents didn't beleive in any medical intervention didn't take him to the doctor and he died from a simple problem that could have been diagnosed his apendix, I will never forget the day we were told he died and was never coming back. Not every parent is as reasonable or caring, even if they had health care who said they would have used it. I live in California where we have all type of clinics for the poor, county hospitals and even private hospitals can't refuse to see you even if you receive a bill you can't pay right a way it's the right thing to do to check on your child or even yourself. This is a crying shame I pray for the poor lost child and the ones who are left who must endure his loss and the fall out.
09:12 AM on 01/14/2012
This is a terrible tragedy and the parents should never have been subject to prosecution. The medical profession has way too much power to enforce prosecution. Can they guarantee that a child will be healed? You only have to watch the news to realize that there is no medical "science". It is an art at best. These parents have had one tragedy already with the loss of their son. Do they need another tragedy and go to jail?
05:48 AM on 01/15/2012
The parents are absolutely guilty of neglect. Regardless of whether or not this child could have been cured, the parents had the RESPONSIBILITY to provide medical care. I don't buy it for a minute that they were in a financial hardship. Why? Because they paid $87 to have their dog treated for fleas. Any responsible, caring parent would take their kid to the doctor and wouldn't worry about the dog. Even if they couldn't cure the cancer, I can guarantee he would have been a heck of a lot more comfortable because they could have managed his pain.
11:02 PM on 01/15/2012
For it to be neglect you have to have the intention to neglect. They misdiagnosed the issue as a common cold. They did not think it was serious. With no intention to commit a crime there is no crime.
09:25 AM on 01/16/2012
Your comment has nothing to do with the situation. Regardless of the capabilities of medical science (yes, science, as there are facts that have been proven with extensive research) parents need to try everything they can to save their own child. It's their duty as a parent. They should go to jail for neglect and unwillingness to find a solution. Colds do not last for months on end usually; therefore, the parents should have taken the next step and taken their child to see a doctor.
04:27 PM on 01/13/2012
This is truly a sad case, and I feel sorry for the parents. As a survivor of Hodgkins Lymphoma, I can honestly say that I could see how the parents would think it was a cold. I had swollen lymph nodes thru my entire first year of college and thought it was a cold, only to find out when I went home for summer break (and went to the Dr. for another issue) that I had Hodgkins Lymphoma! By then I was to stage 3. Other than being tired (which I thought was from pulling all nighters to study) how would one even know?! You DO get swollen lymph nodes when you have a cold or sore throat! I even showed my parents once when I was home for Christmas break and they replied, "Probably just a cold..." Unless you are very familiar with the symptoms of Hodgkin's Lymphoma, who would know to look for it? Shame on the courts for allowing these parents, who surely already feel horrible, to endure this prosecution!
09:16 AM on 01/16/2012
One should know that if swollen lymph nodes last for months on end, a doctor needs to be seen. You just don't ignore the problem and hope it resolves itself, especially with a child. If these parents were dumb enough to not find a way to see the doctor and, at the very least, double check their self-diagnosis was correct, they should not have been parents.
09:41 AM on 01/16/2012
Maybe "one should know", but I went to one doctor right before being diagnosed with stage 3 Hodgkins Lymphoma and mentioned it, and if anyone should know, one would think a doctor would know. This doctor didn't think anything of it. And I told her how long that lymph node had been swollen like that. The thing is, not all of your lymph nodes swell up. I was in Stage 3 and I had one lymph node on my neck that was a bit swollen. TONS inside my body, but only one that was viewable from the outside. Trust me. It's not as obvious as one might think. Not even to some doctors.
02:26 PM on 01/13/2012
I do have a certain amount of sympathy for these parents. My son was diagnosed with leukemia (a different but related type of cancer) last year. My wife and I both have graduate degrees and good insurance, but we also had no idea how seriously ill he was until some very good doctors put the pieces together. Even after his first hospitalization at a top notch children's hospital, the oncologists and hematologists diagnosed him with something fairly benign and sent us on our way. I have no doubt they are devastated at what happened, and I think the flea treatment anecdote is a red herring inserted by the reporter to get this reaction out of people.
09:21 AM on 01/16/2012
Well, they not only had money for flee treatment for a dog, but also had money for video games. Yet they refused to pony up $180 for medical treatment. Come on, these were worthless parents who have not business keeping children. Also, why was it necessary for them to have a case worker in the first place? Because long before this, there was a repeated pattern of neglect and abuse. The state does not just issue a case worker for nothing. Put these people in jail!
