Naked corpses on the streets of Montgomery, Ala., might mean the long-feared zombie uprising has begun and we poor humans might as well just prepare for our brains to ripped from our skulls and eaten.

For better or worse, however, these corpses were actually members of the animals rights group PETA dramatizing their animal rights agenda.

"We had two people painted to look like corpses, wearing underwear [and] holding signs that read, 'We Wouldn't Be Caught Dead in Animal Skins,'" PETA campaigner Katie Arth told The Huffington Post. "They were in stand-up coffins [that] we set up to draw attention to the suffering of animals used for fur, leather wool and exotic skins."

Other activists held signs that read, "Wear Your Own Skin -- Let Animals Keep Theirs" and "Fur Is Dead."

Arth said the goal was to get people's attention and give them the opportunity to question what goes on behind closed doors at fur factory farms.

"Most people love animals -- [they] grew up with dogs and cats, and are just less familiar with animals like foxes and cows," she said. "The things done to them to turn them into a pair of shoes or a coat would be felonies if done to dogs and cats."

The protest took place in front of Henig Furs, Leathers & Outerwear in Montgomery. In addition to holding signs, the activists handed out leaflets to curious onlookers.

"Most people don't want animals to suffer for their clothes but they do," Arth continued. "Animals are often skinned alive. On fur farms a common manner of slaughter is anal and vaginal electrocution. So we were out there to encourage people to make compassionate choices by choosing synthetic options instead of real animal skin."

Tascha Jones, one of the corpse protesters at the event, said she is happy to bare her skin whenever it helps save animals' skins.

"With all the luxurious alternatives available, there's absolutely no excuse to wear animal skins," Jones said.

PETA is all about garnering publicity for themselves in the most outlandish ways. But funny, you NEVER read about them protesting dog auctions where dogs are sold because they are "breeders" and are inhumanely treated, stuffed in filthy cages while waiting for someone to buy them. Or horse auctions, where beautiful horses are sold for slaughter to provide meat. Or going after puppy mills. Or attacking those who breed mares (PMU) only to harvest their urine for pharmaceutical purposes, then kill the mares and their foals. How many animal rescues does PETA raise funds for and support? Not many that I know of; at least, not any of the ones I support, which are several. PETA would rather spout off on the same tired old issues in the same boring way. That's why 99% of the people in this country think they are a friggin' joke. If they did something worthwhile that was truly in the best interests of animals and not for their own self-promotion, I'd respect them a little. But hard to respect uneducated and ridiculous fools.

When women start offering up their breasts, thighs and mutton chops as often as animals do in public restaurants.... then I will stop eating meat.

And the stupidity continues!! With all of the major negative issues we face as a country this PETA nonsense doesn't even rank a place on the back burner...instead, it resides in the freezer next to my steaks, chops, and roasts.

All animals have the same parts........But I like most of those parts. In the kitchen I like them on animals...In the bedroom I like them on a woman.

Ladies, if you are going to protest in the nude at least shave your arm pits.

In the present time this country is barely able to stay afloat, I find all this drama about animal fur, leather and animal products being used to keep people warm a complete waste of time. Ask a homeless person living on the street if they'll like a used leather coat. PETA picks the worst time to show their lack of humanity.

i WILL ROAST AND EAT AN EXTRA BOSTON BUTT IN THEIR HONOR

Yes, because she is equal to a cow, pig, lamb, or buck. That makes alot of sense, and its not natural for animals to eat eachother.

If the government/nanny state bans meat also I will get it like every other prohibited good that I want and just find it on a black market or eat PETA members. She looks good and I've always been very curious of long pig haha!

Fur is certainly dead. So are the flowers they're holding in the picture. So are the boll weevils that feed on the cotton plants that made the undies the protesters are wearing.
03:43 AM on 01/29/2012
I'm not a big fan of PETA but i will admit the above comment is pretty dumb...flowers do not have central nervous systems and there are no studies showing that flowers can feel pain, so I'm pretty sure it is more humane to kill a flower than an animal. Also boll weevils don't suffer or die while feeding on cotton, it is something that they choose to do, so I would venture to guess that a cow being vaginally electrocuted suffers more than a bug does while it eats a plant.
02:15 PM on 01/29/2012
Boll weevils die a "horrid" death. One moment they are hanging out on wheat, next a freakin dinosaur cow gobbles them down, whole, alive!!! Its so inhumane!! Stop the murdering of Boll Weevils but evil cows!

Pittieb215 - consevatisms has a great point. Look, you said: "i'm pretty sure it is more humane to kill a xxxxxx.

What is humane is totally subjective. The death penalty; war; pounds "euthanize" over-population of cats, dogs, horses, cows, goats. I live in ag country - i'm so tired of the disengaged dissension from the urban "wise".

Come on! Think about this. Serious, its totally fine to kill an animal for food, clothing, to cure my kids aliments. What are you going to do to your pet cat that bites the head off of a mouse.

This is nature, this is life and death - accept it. Stop wimping out!
