The fried chicken rivalry between chef David Chang and Questlove of The Roots has been simmering for sometime now after a Twitter back-and-forth between the two gentlemen. Finally, they took their 140-character smack talking to the arena, by agreeing to have a fried chicken battle on April 12 on "Late Night with Jimmy Fallon."
The deal was that if Chang lost, Questlove would get a spread in the next issue of Lucky Peach magazine and Chang would put Questlove's chicken in his Momofuku New York restaurants. If Questlove lost, he'd do dishes at Momofuku and stand outside with a sign advertising the restaurant, and he'd shout out David Chang for a whole week on "Fallon."
Tensions and egos were high on Thursday night's episode of "Fallon." In the first clip, the two contestants talk some smack as they explain their fried chicken recipes. "I'm going to show you how easy it is to beat Questlove," said Chang. "Questlove's chicken is weak like clock radio speakers." As Chang bites into his "127 spice" chicken he says to Questlove, "You've already lost and you don't even know it."
"You don't have season like this, Chang," Questlove fires back. "This will teach you to punk somebody next time on Twitter."
In the second clip, judges Steve Higgins, Tina Fey and John Slattery carefully analyze the two chicken entries. But in the end, all three vote for the same chicken and David Chang is declared the winner. Chang doesn't gloat too much though -- he says he is still going to put Questlove's chicken on the menu, with all proceeds benefitting the Food Bank of New York City. So, everybody wins!!
Questlove wasn't a sore loser either. He tweeted:
