Oprah Feeds Homeless Man Dinner At Scarpetta, Gives Him A Fat Wad Of Cash

Oprah Winfrey

Ask and you shall receive.

A homeless man named Eddie saw Oprah Winfrey eating dinner on the patio of Scarpetta in Beverly Hills recently. Eddie asked her for a bowl of soup, and according to the New York Post's spies, the media mogul did him one better.

"Please, can we get him some money, get him a meal?" asked Oprah. As Scarpetta staff brought him a "feast," one of Oprah's dinner companions handed over a bunch of cash.

Chef (and owner) Scott Conant posted the New York Post article on his Facebook page earlier that day. His only comment? "Wow!!"

Scarpetta is a fine dining Italian restaurant where a plain (but delicious) tomato sauce spaghetti goes for $24. The restaurant has multiple locations across the country, and People points out that when Jay-Z ate at the Miami outpost in 2011, he left a $50,000 tip on a $250,000 bottle of champagne.

Oprah's generosity is legendary. In 2007, she founded the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls school in South Africa, which provides educational and leadership opportunities in a luxurious setting to underprivileged girls in the area. Throughout her talkshow, which ended in 2011, she emphasized charity and "paying it forward" as a sure-fire way to live the best life possible.

It's nice to know that this is how Oprah acts in her private life too.

I'm really shocked at the negativity on here. It is not Oprah's responsibility to feed one man or America. It is her money that she has free will to spend however she wants because she took the talents she had and worked hard for it. For those who have never been to Africa, let me tell you that the quality of life there is heart breaking. Even a homeless man is much more blessed to live in America than those living there. So the fact that she is planting seeds in her very roots is a blessing; excuse her if she isn't "saving America". Whether she did it from the goodness of her heart or for publicity, she still helped someone. None of us were there so none of us have room to cast judgement on the situation. Stop being critical.

Much is required to whom much is given... I strongly recommend that they do some "soul searching" and research & investigate all of the inventions created by George Washington Carver, including Peanut Butter, and analyze who's been raking in $billions annually from the "100 plus" inventions of George Washington Carver who's one of our own! Common logic should tell anyone with intelligence that being that there's a monopoly on the "media, banking system, government & all of the major corporations etc.," WE should have a full monopoly on the planting, cultivation, harvesting & production of peanuts and all of the products associated with peanuts discovered by our brother "George Washington Carver."
Pursuant to the way Trayvon Martin was hunted down by a lunatic with a gun, who ignored the rules of the neighborhood watch volunteer program and the 911 dispatcher, who specifically told him not to follow 17 yr old Trayvon Martin (gz wouldn't have pursued Trayvon, without a gun!) and the fact that he was given such a low bail is telling, because what it says is that if this "uncivilized system" gives you a permit to carry a gun, you can shoot down any Black person with $millions or without and it's alright!!! That said, if you can't see that we're being victimized by a "government sponsored holocaust" then something is wrong with how you're comprehending reality!

That was a very nice deed. Reading some of these comments & SMH. People are so judgemental & so ungrateful. You have the same ability to help someone less fortunate than you. Do yourself a favor and look at the man in the mirror.

Opra is strong enough to start small economic banks, something that would give the less fortunate a shot at starting a small business; ie. Food Cart Vendor, Hand Car Wash, On Line e Commerce. Alot of us have some physical, mental, homeless issues... single parenthood whatever. She did it over in Africa, she along with JZ and others could team up and make a difference in major markets in the country. Unless and untill that happens we (Blacks) will find ourselves burning in the streets .........soon!!!!

There have been many minorities, especially Blacks, suffering from poverty and oppression without a helping hand to really help them pull themselves out. Oprah is a generous woman and I appreciate her. But when it comes to Black people there never seems to be enough help. The only help Blacks can get is from welfare which is really no help at all. Low paying jobs in which you can't really get anywhere near the "American Dream." Or worse no job at all due to mistakes made in one's life and any attempt at reinventing oneself is futile because this society refuses to let you. There should be a foundation that helps these people, once they've demonstrated that they can't pull themselves us on their own, these Black people, in particular, through these tough times by helping them with loans to start businesses or to buy equipment, more skills for their business, and helping homeless people become production and get homes. These are the pitfalls in, right now, in the Black community. It seems there is no one really interested in helping. more than myself. Somebody has to see this and help. The President is doing what he can but the opposition is going to limit what he does whenever they can if it steps on their own agenda. Who's going to help those who seem to have a very hard time helping themselves?

They walk up to me all the time asking for coins. Or whatever you can give me brother. I mash them off with something good.I give them a buck or two. And if it's on one of my good days, I might give him 4 or 5 bucks. It ain't like it's happening every second by second. You know what I'm saying? Plus, it's a lot of them running around here like that. And what I respect is that they do have the audacity to ask, and not take or steal from somebody. That is why I am so free hearted towards the homeless. It ain't like it was back in the days, when it was always take steal, or rob. You ask me for something, you got that.

Very disappointed, with the negative comments. Doesnt matter if it was a regular person offering help to someone. I'm just really happy that she did it. The bible preaches about generosity and the rewards you receive from it. This is truely a woman of god and has been blessed in her life! I Pray that someone is touched by this as I am and will pay it forward as well. God bless

O.kay, AND? She also gave a dominantly white audience of people new cars, a bowl of soup is supposed to make her eligible for Sainthood! She'e just trying to regain the popularity she had with every day average people when she first came out. Many people including myself do the Very Same thing on a regular basis {having MUCH LESS WE CAN AFFORD TO GIVE!}, I guess the soup was supposed to taste better and be more nourishing because it came at her request! She'll get back more on her taxes for that very bowl of soup than it cost!!!

I want to know how's it her generosity when she asked can someone give him some food and money it didn't even come from her.Her companion gave the man the money and I'm sure the restaurant didn't charge her for his soup

The Gesture, she wasn't carrying any so her staff gave it to him.Stop being so technical the lady has a history of her generosity.
06:01 PM on 04/29/2012
Sorry but to me everytime she does something generous is a tax write off for her just look at her show she helped people that could afford it and it said nowhere in the article that she had no money on her
12:24 PM on 05/29/2012
For one why are we still discussing this and i don't have to verify it, i just read it didn't say she asked her staff it said she said,"Can we" as if she was talking to the other people in the place. And she isn't the only one that helps people but they made it a big deal and the money didn't even come from her please reread the passage again. And if i was working for someone i would talk them up to not denying she wasn't generous to her staff they work for her and she could afford it

@Francette Rush- Oprah has personal assistants who carry her money, phones(several she has), as a part of their job description. As an employer- Oprah has been by far the most compassionate giving person because she has given employment opportunities to many and her staff has always praised her generosity to them. Oprah 's staff can be carrying $50,000.00 or more and thats not including credit cards that may have a limitless balance of her own money. She didn't lecture the homeless man- she just gave him what he asked for. How can she write this off? Charity does not always get notated and your ASSUMING something you can't verify
