PHOENIX, June 2 (Reuters) - A marijuana-smoking woman was arrested on Saturday in Phoenix after she accidentally drove away with her five-week-old son in a child safety seat on the roof of her vehicle, police said.

The baby fell off the car in the middle of an intersection and was found unharmed and strapped into the seat, said Phoenix police spokesman James Holmes.

The mother Catalina Clouser, 19, was booked into jail on child abuse and aggravated assault charges, he said. The infant was taken to a local hospital as a precaution and is in the custody of state Child Protective Services.

"It appears the suspect put the baby on the roof of the car and drove off, forgetting he was still on the roof," Holmes said in a written statement.

Police said Clouser and her boyfriend had been smoking marijuana in a park and left with the toddler to buy beer late on Friday night. Officers stopped the car and the boyfriend was arrested for suspicion of driving under the influence while driving with the baby in the 2000 Ford Focus.

Police learned that Clouser was so upset about the arrest that she drove to a friend's home and "admittedly smoked one or two additional bowls of marijuana," Holmes said.

She left at about midnight with the baby asleep in the car seat, placing the child on top of the vehicle, he said. Clouser apparently did not realize that the baby was missing until she arrived home.

Holmes said witnesses who were friends of the mother advised officers that the child belonged to Clouser. The mother then arrived at the scene and "made admissions to what had occurred." (Reporting by David Schwartz; Editing by Greg McCune)

Wow, what a stupid woman. But what do you expect from an unwed teenage mother from Arizona? They probably taught her abstinence and that pot makes you kill people, if she even made it that far in the educational system there. Obviously those lessons were accurate, fact-filled and informative lectures provided by the clergy- err school system.

But yeah, this makes a great example of an average adult user. . . .(if you can't get the sarcasm, you probably need to read more).

Seriously, this girl has a track record of mistakes based on the short description of her, the potsmoking was probably least of them. Swap weed with alcohol and this would probably have played out exactly the same, but it's probably easier for a 19 y/o in Arizona to get pot than alcohol. Sad, really, since she just wanted to go have some beer illegally with her BF . . . lol, but yeah, it's the weed, not the idiot at fault. Keep telling yourself that.

Yeah, let's LEGALIZE pot!

LOL!!!

Alcohol is legal and people do incredibly stupid things when under its influence all the time. This is an example ONE stupid woman, doing ONE stupid thing. Yes, it is UNBELIEVABLE, UNFORGIVABLY stupid, and she should be punished for it. Sounds like she is being punished to me. Regardless of whether it was legal or not for her to be consuming the substance, there ARE laws dictating that it is very much ILLEGAL to do what she did (drive under the influence, negligence, etc), and she is being charged with them.

What you are saying is that because you can find an instance of abuse, all instances of use are negated. That's insane, and if we wrote all laws in that fashion when the first child ate buckyballs, instead of having safety labels applied and making it clear these high powered magnets are not intended for children, we would have enacted laws making magnets illegal.

Liberals lack logic and you emphasize that sad fact.

Apples to bananas logic at work ...

Tell employers that they should hire people on ILLEGAL drugs while you're at it too!

LOL!

Lay off the weed, sweetie .... it's affecting your "logic".

Yes, tell that to ALL EMPLOYERS - that they need to HIRE and in fact have a QUOTA for people on ILLEGAL DRUGS that AFFECT their judgment. LOL!

BTW, lay off the weed ....

"a marijuana smoking mother..."
I can't even put into words how ridiculous that is. I'll bet my life on it that if this mother had been prescribed any medicine that a doctor can prescribe that alters the chemicals in the brain to a """"more balanced state"""" - this headline would simply read "19 year old mother drives off with baby on roof"

Now on the other hand if the mother was drunk and shouldn't have been driving in the first place, much less even consuming alcohol at the age of 19, then I can see a headline reading "drunk mother drives off with baby on roof" or something of the like.

you guys are disgusting.

Of course, if we legalize marijuana, we won't see these types of incidents happening more often.

Obviously we would not because it would be under stricter control. Right now it is easier to buy weed than alcohol. Weed dealers don't discriminate against anyone; in other words, they don't check for ID. All they want are the greenbacks. If it's legalized and regulated, then the govt controls it and actually does discriminate based on age and probably other factors (medical necessity, etc.).

See: you tried to be a smarmy smartass and were actually correct on something for a change. Put that in your pipe and smoke it, simpleton.

Pot selling dealers and drug dealing associates kill 50,000 people in Mexico within the last three years. But I understand, the mother who smoked pot and drove off with her child on the roof of her car is more important. GEEZE, how can 50,000 deaths in mexico ever compare to one child in the US who was left on the roof as his mother drove off?

Wait, Wait...how about this headline "Worldwide Death Toll Reaching Millions as Drug War Plays Out. Cost to society is incalculable as millions are imprisoned for minor drug offenses despite billions spent by government to control drug trade. After 75 years of control efforts, many in government realize this is like prohibition. Make the drug trade illegal and incre4ase your profits. Al Capone and the Kennedy family would be proud of the current laws (that don't work for society but do work for the criminal element.......you f___in idiot)!

Probably an OWS protester. Some people should not have children till they become adults themselves.
