When does a hug become a crime?

One alleged serial hugger nicknamed "Jack the Gripper" is accused of pretending to know women and tricking them into giving him a hug, according to ABC News.

Now Missouri prosecutors are trying to determine if the accusations made by 36 women against the 44-year-old man amount to a criminal offense.

"He'd say, 'Hi, remember me? I lived down the street in the corner house. How ya been?'" Des Peres, Mo., Detective Marshall Broughton said. "Obviously [the women] didn't remember him, but he did it so quickly and convincingly that they felt embarrassed that they didn't know him."

Broughton told the Riverfront Times that the suspect was identified after one of his victims took down his license plate and police looked at security tapes from a local supermarket where the alleged hugger had committed some of his questionable embraces. Broughton also said a victim out of Des Peres picked him out of a photo lineup.

Jezebel nicely sums up the ambiguities of serial-hugging.

"He's banking on the razor-thin line between being friendly and being harassed. Will it save him from prosecutors?"

I think there ought to be more serial huggers out there. My personally, I'm a wary person. Having been in the military and graduated from a top notch law enforcement academy, I learned to trust no one. That's my fallibility. But it's nice to see people out there who will still willingly hug a stranger despite the inherent risks. The case is garbage. Any charges would be dropped. There's no doubt.

That's awesome. It's a shame how such miserable people in the world could try to turn that into a criminal matter.

36 women were so offended by this guy's hugging that all 36 of them filed a criminal complaint and had a cop or somebody follow him around and watch him do this over and over again to make the case against him? Who's more pathetic? This guy or the women that made the complaint?

I'm trying to think through the mental process this alleged hugging "vicitm" made to go from "I really didn't know that guy" to sicking the cops on him and also getting 35 other women to do the same. Did she watch him do this 35 other times?

This is news... its a hug they could of refused it regardless of how it was told. Next in the news will be homeless people asking for money on the street. Should you have to look at them? Lawsuit filed cause people had to look at homeless person feel like it could happen to them damages pending for depression.
