Google Transparency Report Shows Government Surveillance On The Rise In 2012

Google Transparency Report

The Huffington Post     First Posted: 11/14/12 EST Updated: 11/16/12 EST

The internet is becoming an increasingly monitored sphere.

According to Google's sixth bi-annual Transparency Report, released on Nov. 13, the number of government requests to remove or survey content from the search engine's services steadily increased in 2012.

Google's report on the rise in digital interference from Big Brother comes amid furor over a sex scandal involving former CIA Director General David Petraeus, who resigned from his position last Friday and admitted to an affair. Sources said Petraeus had a relationship with Paula Broadwell, who in 2012 published a fawning biography on the general. In this couple's case, the affair was uncovered using Gmail metadata buried in email exchanges.

"Broadwell will now become part of the statistics that Gmail reports in its next semi-annual transparency report on government data requests," Wired deftly noted after reporting on methods the FBI used to uncover the affair.

In a blog post explaining the most recent Transparency Report, Google writes that from January to June of 2012, government officials made 20,938 inquiries about 34,614 specific accounts. These figures were higher than those reported in the previous report.

Take a look at the graph below to see how government requests to Google have increased since the company began releasing this information in 2009:

The amount of content that governments want completely removed from Google's services is a number that also saw a sharp increase throughout the last six months. While this statistic has remained relatively steady in previous reports, the company received 1,791 requests to remove 17,746 pieces of content in 2012. Check out the numbers in the graph below:

"Government surveillance is on the rise," Senior Policy Analyst Dorothy Chou states in Google's blog post. "[G]overnment demands for user data have increased steadily since we first launched the Transparency Report."

But The Atlantic is quick to point out that Google doesn't comply with all of these requests. In fact, since 2010, the company has been less compliant with governments' requests for removal of content from Google services. In the United States, Google said it recently complied with less than 50 percent of these government requests.

But governments' requests for user data is another story. According to the Transparency Report, Google still complies with 90 percent of these orders in the U.S.

So should you be worried about your personal email accounts? Most people probably shouldn't be, according to Stewart Baker, former assistant secretary at the Department of Homeland Security. "The government can't just wander through your emails just because they'd like to know what you're thinking or doing," Baker recently told the AP. "But if the government is investigating a crime, it has a lot of authority to review people's emails."

Clearly these reported events are not to be held in persuasion by any poll taken here. It seems does adverse however to declare government intrusion into what some may deem private. Thereby reducing use by those most suspect. Free speech and privacy do not walk hand in hand.

Could this explain why more than 90% of the comments I make on hp are reviewed by their "monitors?"

Or are those "monitors" actually some of the tens-of-thousands of people hired by this current administration to "protect" us from ourselves?

Already are in some cases. America is only doomed if we give up! Obama only won by less than 4 million (and that is being questioned by many - for one truck and busloads many who don't speak English and showing them which button to push - voting machines refusing to register a Romney vote and on and on). The current population of this country is 314, 000,000. What we need to do is wake up and educate more sheeple for one. Stay strong, keeping and stay safe.

Just remember, emails, texts, and IM's are forever. As are searches. When you type into the web, assume you are posting it on the front page of the New York Times.

Not to me but sadly many of the sheeple don't seem to care. God help us! Did you sign your secede pition, for your state? I am hoping everyone who voted against Obama and some who did and already regret it do. He may have made it appear he won a battle, but the war isn't over, may people wake up and stand up... Keep posting and stay active in every way possible. Take care!

This stuff has skyrocketed under Obama. I remember growing up in the 60's where the left wanted the man out of their lives, now the 60's left has become the man and has become more intrusive then anyone could of imagined. They sold their souls to the devil and through the school systems have brainwashed the younger generation moulding them into litte stepford girls and boys. The new left is more a threat and danger to our privacy then Nixon or J.Edgar Hoover ever was. The free spirit of the sixties has been replaced by a 1984 type scene. Scary.

Not even close. The Cold War started the invasion of privacy, it just got better and less obvious. Under Bush all our privacy went out the window because "We must stop these agressors" and "protect ourselves". {From our own government]. This meant any government person could get any information wanted about anyone without bothering the courts to get a warrant. Obama stopped the most outrageous of these intrusions but he isn't liked by certain ageny personel so we all get the resulting fallout.

Then why is he allowing the massive cyber unit to be created out west and its super computers will soon be open for business, monitoring ALL our emails and communications.   With an executive order he can stop it, but he wont.  Plus he wants to create a master switch on the internet where he can shut it down.

The left isn't the left anymore. No way would the left stand for this.

Most of the left are Libertarians, they just don't know it yet.

Big Brother is watching everything. Due to the use of charge cards, they know where you spend your money and what you buy. With the cards at the grocery stores, they even know what type of food you eat and normally purchase. No way would anyone be able to help hide one or more people as happened in WWII. The groceries would be a give away. Are the camps ready? Big Brother is marching.
