Ana Gloria Garcia Gutierrez Arrested For Riding Manatee In Florida (PHOTOS)

Nov 24 (Reuters) - A Florida woman photographed two months ago riding an endangered manatee in violation of state law was arrested on Saturday on misdemeanor charges, authorities said.

The Pinellas County Sheriff's office said deputies arrested Ana Gloria Garcia Gutierrez, 53, without incident at her job at a Sears store in St. Petersburg on a warrant for violating the Florida Manatee Sanctuary Act.

The state makes it illegal to "annoy, molest, harass or disturb" the endangered aquatic mammals, whose survival is imperiled by manmade threats, including boating collisions. Violations are considered a second-degree misdemeanor.

The arrest stemmed from reports on Sept. 30 that an unidentified woman had been seen touching and riding a manatee - which can grow up to 12 feet (3.7 meters) in length and weigh up to 1,800 pounds (818 kilograms) - at Fort Desoto Park, a few miles from downtown St. Petersburg.

Following media coverage of her cavorting with the mammal, Garcia Gutierrez called the sheriff's office two days later to turn herself in.

She admitted the offense claiming "she is new to the area and did not realize it was against the law to touch or harass manatees," the office said in a news release.

It was not immediately clear what penalties Garcia Gutierrez would face if convicted. (Reporting by Tim Gaynor; Editing by Paul Simao)

As a scuba diver, I've had personal experience with these wonderful animals. On river dives, we are told NOT to approach, and NOT to harass them, but if they approach us, we are allowed to touch them.
What they don't tell you is that the animals are very friendly, and WILL approach YOU. We were filming them, and they will come up to you and lick the camera. They will nudge you, try to engage you in play. I think it harasses them more if you ignore them.
I can see where this woman would think her actions harmless.
I would vote not guilty.

Err there is a big difference between a Manatee coming up and nudging you and riding it; that's kinda harassment. Her ignorance of the law caused her to be arrested, I'd vote guilty.

The law says that the animal must be "molested" or "disturbed" so which cop interviewed the alleged victim (the Manatee) to see if it was "disturbed" by this woman?

No one?

Case Dismissed!

They are NOT to be touched by humans. The reason is they are susceptible to human colds and they are fatal to manatees

This is so stupid .. They arrest her at her job which will probably cause her to get fired .. I don't see the big deal .. I live in the Bay Area and I can tell you that the police are crazy .. This woman is new and didn't know she was breaking the law and she certainly didnt hurt the animal .. Why dont the police spend their time looking for violent offenders instead of locking up a woman who made a simple mistake .. Such great police work to arrest such a hardend criminal who is such a threat to society

Really you want the women to get killed by an aligator because she got a ride from a manatee. There was no harmful intent in what she did. If the manatee was so bothered by her it would have swam away or not have let the women get close to her. Let me guess you support Peta the hypocritical organization in all they do which includes killing 99% of the animals they get whose only goal is to get press and make millions off of self righteous people.

Sorry, but ignorance of the law is not an excuse. And the cops in the bay area are not "crazy".

"Following media coverage of her cavorting with the mammal, Garcia Gutierrez called the sheriff's office two days later to turn herself in."

The sheriff just had to show how big and bad he was and arrested her at her job. Probably assuring that she would now be fired. Such Machismo!
