It was a family reunion that almost ended in murder.

When Artavious Malone, 16, of Wellington, Fla., accidentally ran into his estranged father, Archie Malone, on Nov. 9, there were no hugs.

Instead, the teenager allegedly fired at least four shots at his father, who ran up the street to flee the bullets, according to NBCMiami.com.

Father and son have reportedly had a distant relationship since the father sent the son to a juvenile center for his behavior a few years ago, according to a police report filed by the Palm Beach County Sheriffs Dept.

But the liquor store reunion was strictly coincidental, according to the report. Archie Malone thought his son was in town for a high school football game.

There was immediate tension between the two, according to the Florida Sun-Sentinel, which started when Artavious bumped his dad in the shoulder, knocking Archie off-balance. He responded by smacking his son in the face.

At that point, Artavious left the liquor store, went to his car and that's when he allegedly started firing the gun at his dad.

The suspect told police that he didn't fire the shots and just heard them when he was outside, according to the Sun-Sentinel.

Nevertheless, he was arrested and charged as an adult for attempted first-degree murder and possession of a firearm by a Florida delinquent, according to the Palm Beach Post.

He remains at the Palm Beach County Jail, where he was booked Friday.

Are 16 year olds allowed in liquor stores in Florida? I noticed the article didn't say whether he was inside the store with someone else or if he was just hanging around outside it.

As a rule, no. If you go in with a very young child, they will serve you, but even then, they don't have to. The article stated that he left the store and went to his car where he got the gun. It seems as if he was inside the store. Having said that, being in the store isn't a crime in Florida, unless the underage person attempts to purchase alcohol - it's just the policy of the major chains to not allow anyone underage in the store in the first place.

Those who initially reported this may be calling a beverage center a liquor store. These would be stores that carry all manner of bottled beverages. Things like soda, flavored water, iced teas, and of course liquor.

Also remember that this is a store, not a bar. Those under 21 may be permitted entry to these locations since they still need to present ID to buy alcohol, and there are no open containers inside that may be stolen by underage patrons.
