You've got to hand it to TMZ, they know how to make a headline happen. Stopping Sarah Silverman outside of a comedy club, the news and gossip site asked the her to weigh in on Spike Lee's criticism of the use of the n-word in Quentin Tarantino's "Django Unchained".

To Silverman's credit, she gave a fairly thoughtful answer to the controversy-stoking question, first noting that the setting of the film seems to warrant the use of the word, then commenting that as an artist, Spike Lee is no stranger to his work drumming up negative attention, which isn't a bad thing. "You can't tell art what to do," she explains.

Watch the clip above and let us know if you agree with Silverman's response.

I was really pleasantly surprised by the thoughtful and insightful comment from Sara Silverman. I can definitely empathize with Spike Lee's thoughts on the subject, but I think his (sometimes, justified) animosity towards Tarantino tends to guide his 'evals', sometimes.

Some people seem to not want to deal with what actually happened during slavery. Until they do, it's difficult to have a real dialogue in terms of how bad things are today. 2.4 Million people incarcerated in this country. That is the highest percentage of population in the world at 1%. It is also the highest raw number-no other country in the world, including China which has 5 times the population of the U.S., has that many people legally enslaved. There are better ways to deal with many social issues than a criminal injustice system that is clearly racist.

How do you suggest we deal with criminals? A slap on the wrist? China kills it's criminals, perhaps that is why they have a lower prison population....
