Rupert Murdoch issued an apology of sorts after an incendiary tweet about a 400-pound woman who fell through a New York City sidewalk.
Ulanda Williams, who stands 6' 5" and weighs 400 lbs, fell through a sidewalk while waiting for a bus on Friday. On Tuesday, Murdoch reacted to the news, tweeting:
How did fat lady who fell thru street get to 400 lbs?Welfare, stamps, etc? Then leave us all with 20yrs immense health bills.

The backlash from Twitter users was swift. The media mogul stood by his remark, but clarified his tweet, writing:
Did not mean to beunsympathetic to 400 lb lady, but fact remains unhealthy eating by rich and poor driving up premiums for all.

Murdoch has gotten himself into some trouble on Twitter since he joined the site at the end of 2011. Last year, he walked back an explosive tweet criticizing "Jewish owned press" for its coverage of Israel. In another tweet, he once referred to celebrities who were victims of phone hacking as "scumbags."
