Kepler Space Telescope Data Reveals Billions Of Earth-Like Planets Near Earth

If ET phones home today, his long distance charge might not be as much as people believed when Steven Spielberg's classic film came out three decades ago.

That's because recent data from NASA's Kepler space telescope suggests that billions of Earth-like planets are much closer than ever before imagined.

"The information we presented today will excite the general public because we now know that the nearest potentially Earth-like world is likely within 13 light years of the sun," astronomer Courtney Dressing said in an email to The Huffington Post.

"Astronomically speaking, 13 light years is practically next door."

While we don't know if intelligent life exists on any of these planets, it raises the chances of that possibility.

Watch this video about the red dwarf suns and Earth-like planets:

The scientific team studied the huge number of red dwarf stars in our galaxy -- stars that are smaller and have a longer life span than our own sun.

Just doing the math, the odds of Earth-like planets in our galaxy are, well, astronomical.

Scientists estimate 6 percent of the 75 billion red dwarf stars may have Earth-size planets orbiting them at a possible habitable distance. That works out to approximately 4.5 billion Earths out there.

"Before today, it could have been that Earth-like planets did not exist, or that they were so rare that the closest one would be beyond the reach of any telescope we might construct. Thus we would never know whether or not we were truly alone," astronomer David Charbonneau told HuffPost in an email.

Charbonneau, co-author of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics study, acknowledges the intense interest the public has in the search for extraterrestrial intelligence.

"I would say that the single greatest question in all of science is 'Are we alone?' The announcement today moves the ball downfield significantly toward answering this question.

"In my conversations with people around the world, I have found that this great question provides enormous perspective on our lives, in much the same way that knowing the physical size of the Universe has humbled our view of our place in the cosmos," Charbonneau said.

But even if a planet like Earth is only a stone's throw away, at 13 light years from us, how could we even see it with our current technology?

"Future missions, such as the NASA James Webb Space Telescope (the successor to Hubble) and proposed extremely large ground-based telescopes, like the Giant Magellan Telescope, will be able to probe the atmospheres of nearby habitable planets," Dressing said.

"Those missions will be able to search for biosignatures, like oxygen, and possibly lead to the first announcement of life on another world."

The results of Dressing's and Charbonneau's study will be published in The Astrophysical Journal.

This in related to the comment above regarding a conversation with an alien. NEED HELP, PLEASE. There was a TV episode that had 3-4 aliens, who were disguised as humans, sitting in a booth in a diner, next to a plate glass window, discussing, IIRC, alien life on Earth. I think it's an X-files ep., but I couldn't find it in their episode guide. Can anyone provide the answer to what TV series this ep appeared in, and/or the name of the ep. TIA!

Considering what Humans have done to their fellows in their quest to conquer, we should be praying we have no near neighbors.

they call everything they find "LIFE" when its nothing but gas or dirt or a rock, or grooves in dirt,it's an attempt to make a case that the bible is wrong as to how life began, these close minded sciencetist already have a belief that the Bible is wrong ,they are trying to put a formula together to prove their close minded social viewpoints, but I like the fact we explore space,it was space travel that gave us the microwave oven, the cell phone, freeze dried food that last forever, the satellite, which provided satellite TV with a dish etc.,but I beleive there is another agenda they wont talk about...

you are a good argument for questioning whether we have intelligent life on earth!

Just for the record, the Catholic church is not on board with this nonsense. In fact, they recently declared that Darwin was right and evolution exists.

Evolution and Intelligent Design are not at odds.

Neither are Religion and Science enemies.

Only the close-minded see conflicts where none exist.

You can spend money on exploring space now while we still have plenty of time. Are wait until the end of earth and the extinction of mankind and all your future ancestors. You can lead a horse to water but you can't make him drink. So it up to people to save themselves and the human race. And you no the ones that complain about spending money on space exploration. Will be the first in line to get off the planet if the end of earth were coming.

My bus pass will cover that, won't it?

The truth is out there. We must search the heavens discover who we are.

do we really CARE about these planets? has it NOT been enough to destroy THIS one?
12:21 PM on 02/11/2013
That is precisely why we need another one.
01:37 PM on 02/12/2013
We do not have the power to destroy the planet, just us. The planet will cleanse itself, if we do not do a better job of continuing our species.

Wonder what it would be like to just have a casual conversation with a space alien. You know, compare stuff between planets (sports, science, religion, politics, etc).

I've always said that the first thing I'm going to mention is his need for an experienced local trade rep... so he can be sure of getting the best mud for his near-worthless diamonds.

Why are scientists so stupid? Why do they assume an Earth-like world is the only place with potential for intelligent life? In their terminology, "Earth-like worlds" include bodies like Mars, Venus and Titan, so Earth might be an outlier. Maybe it's the gas giants that hold most of the intelligent life in the Galaxy?

oh my gosh your so smart. much smarter than scientists...?

You are correct. Earthlings only know carbon based life forms because that is all we have. I believe that God has created life forms that are far beyond our ability to even imagine. It is possible some only breathe carbon monoxide and oxygen is poisionous; some may have forms that even Gene Roddenberry or George Lucas couldn't imagine. Some may need extreme heat or extreme cold to survive. The possibilities are endless. Just because we do not know about it does not mean it does not exist; it only means we do not have the comprehension to go beyond what we know. In reality, the human brain is extremely primative, so I do not doubt that God has created other beings that are far more enlightened than we are. Look at how hard He tried to teach us simple obedience to his word and laws but we, arogant and stupid humans, did not follow Him and terrible things came to pass. He finally gave up and send Jesus as one of us in hope we would relate to someone who looked, lived, and died like up in order to bring us back to God's way. THAT is how stupid we are as a species. Hopefully, some of his other beings aren't so hard to teach.

Nice statement. We need only look at say Jellyfish. If they did not exist on our world, they would be a frightening thing to see and with some being very poisonous, that would be shocking too.

Lets hope if their is intelligent life on any of those planets, that they are much smarter than the clowns we have trying to manage this one.
