Knife In Walmart Cake: Cayden Bibeau, 2, Finds Weapon In His Elmo-Themed Birthday Cake

The Huffington Post     First Posted: 03/07/13 EST Updated: 03/07/13 EST

His second birthday was almost his last.

Cayden Bibeau, 2, was either shocked or psyched when he found a paring knife embedded in his Elmo-themed birthday cake over the weekend, but his father was not pleased. Nathan Bibeau told WGME that his son's birthday party was cancelled after the family found the knife, left in the cake by an employee at Walmart where he bought it.

The Lewiston, Maine family found the knife as they were cutting through it.

Bibeau said he was "disappointed and upset" at Walmart, according to the New York Daily News, and that his entire family left his son's party early because of the find. Yahoo! News points out, the ol' knife-in-a-cake is a classic excuse to leave a child's birthday party early).

Bibeau made waves when he publicized the cake flop, as Walmart swiftly issued an apology and considered pulling the knives from its bakeries across the country.

Bibeau says he still plans to shop at Walmart and "won't hold a grudge."

Must be a lawyer. So was the 2 year old cutting the cake? If so the parents should be sued for child neglect. Where is Shakespeare when you need him? Why can't we sue lawyers?

Vicky, mistakes happen. Everyone makes them. Though luck.

What a phoney, wimpy, opportunistic family! Get a freaking life! I get so sick of these types of stories where some little mistake happens and a person or family in this case, goes all self righteous so they can either get attention or sue or both.
The liability laws in this country just bring out the worst in people. What a bunch of babies to all go home and ruin the party just so they can make a big deal of of a dumb mistake.

Good luck finding a sympathetic jury, unless Maine is like New York or California...

Exactly, it was an accident, things happen so there isn't any reason to get all sue happy. As far as ruining the childs birthday, I'm sure he didn't have a clue about what was going on. Need to come up with a better excuse for why the family left early.

It was an accident. AN ACCIDENT. I was using the knife to trim the paper around the cake pan, and I set it on the paper. As I grabbed the cake pan from the oven, I turned to flip the cake out of the cake pan onto the paper. The cake pan I was holding it was blocking my view of the paper and the small knife I had set down. After that I decorated the cake and sent it on it's way. I promise to be more careful next time, no need to get lawyers or ban knives from the WalMart kitchen.

Um, actually, in bakeries like the one in Walmarts across the country, they receive the cakes already made. It comes as a full sheet cake and these sheets are cut to size, based on the order. In addition, they are received in a pre-cooked, frozen state and are thawed prior to decorating. No cooking involved.

However, you are correct in assuming it was an accident and was placed there mistakenly. I'm sure this was the same knife used to cut the cake down to size and it was forgotten before placing the cake on the serving cardboard.
