What are YOU grateful for?

First Posted: 09/19/13 EDT Updated: 09/21/13 EDT

World Gratitude Day is kind of like the dress rehearsal for Thanksgiving -- except your pants will still fit when it’s over. On Friday, we asked you to share photos and stories of the people, places or things that you're very thankful for. Your replies ranged from beautiful to bittersweet, and we feel grateful for every special memory you shared ... though you do owe us a new box of tissues now!

We've closed the gallery, but hope you enjoy looking through the photos today.

Warning: You're about to feel a burning desire to tell somebody that you love them.

  • Grateful to be alive

    poochicat:
I am grateful that my family survived this house fire that occured 3/15/13 at 12:23am, while we were sleeping. The reason we awoke was not only from smoke alarms but also because the fire raced across our home and hit some propane tanks that started blowing off and shaking the entire home. By the time I ran to get my boys on the other side of the house and ran out of the home, there were flames and smoke coming at us. Thereafter the roof in the garage and bedroom caved in. I am Thankful that we survived and we have started to rebuild. Some may see it as a tragedy, I see it as a moment to look back and say I am grateful that we made it through. If we can make it through that, we can make it through anything!

He was my favorite person when I was barely walking, and he’s still my favorite person now as a married woman of 24 years. He was recently diagnosed with colon cancer and due to complications of a perforated bowel, is losing his fight. I’ve never felt so much heartbreak- I didn’t even know this much pain was possible. He took me to and from school, we had our very own lunch and dinner dates at our favorite place, Sizzler. Hell, as I got older I didn’t even like it as much but I LOVED it because it was OUR thing. We would go to SeaWorld and Disneyland every year. When I went away for school and my husband, we texted and talked constantly. He has, and will always be one of the most influential people I’ll ever encounter. My memories with him are priceless, and that time spent with him something I never thought would be the only memories I’d have left. I love you, B.. so much. I don’t know how I can gather myself up to go on without you. It’s the hardest thing I’ve ever had to do.

Supported everything and anything I wanted to do even if she knew it would blow up in my face; I needed to learn on my own. Supported me through thyroid cancer and continues to support me and always will. Love my Mother!

  • Beauty Of Life

    Sandra Shattuck Roll:
I'm always so taken back by the beauty of the little things that sometimes get passed over. Like the splendor of the mountains in summer. Everyone always notices them in fall but they get overlooked in spring, summer and winter. The fact they are there, they should be noticed every chance you get. I'm so lucky and thankful to be able to enjoy the little things that sometimes get overlooked because they aren't as noticeable in the off seasons.

  • I am loved as just me

    Jenna Peranteau:
Accepted and loved with all my faults. And I return it in spades, because I found it late: at 44.

  • What would I do without Mike??

    jatmat726:
In Sept 1991 My , now husband, Mike moved in with me. Less than 3 weeks later I fell and broke my neck, resulting in a C5-C6 spinal cord injury. We were told I was a quadriplegic and would never walk. He stayed with me all these years. The doctors were wrong, it took a long time, but I do walk with a cane. I do believe, if not for Mike, I would still be quadriplegic. I tried to be the best I could because of my love for him. We were married in 1994 and although I still have problems caused by the spinal cord injury, we travel and enjoy life as much as we can. I can't even imagine life without him:-)

  • My Angel, Jayden

    trubrat98:
My miracle baby, Jayden is the person I am most grateful for. I was told I could not have children and had no clue I was pregnant until I was almost 5 month along. He has had several heart surgeries and complications due to DiGeorges Syndrome and was in the hospital for the first 6 months of his life but, even after everything he has gone through, is one of the happiest babies I have ever known. He makes my life worth living.

  • Pets

Her photo called to me on the adoption site, even though I thought I wanted a Siamese. Then I thought she was adopted, but no, the woman chose her sister. So home she came. She fetches, trills, and is boneless, carry around cat, she can be crazy, and makes me giggle daily. She's worth a million to me!

  • I am grateful for being able to capture a moment in time with my grand daughter. And it is funny too.

We are so blessed that our family finally gets to be together for all of these special days!

  • Yay for little sisters

Though I don't always show it, I am grateful for my little sister. She is a special, beautiful and talented young woman. I am lucky to call her both my family and my friend. I don't tell her that nearly enough.

  • Grateful for little Rocky.

He makes me laugh and brings much joy into an otherwise solitary life. I am so grateful he came into my life.

  • I'm grateful for my kids. They remind me that there is always another perspective. I find photos on my phone that they have taken and I'm always surprised to discover how they view the world, what they find beautiful, important or silly.

  • Thank you, random guy!

That class was the first I'd ever had with him, and encouraging those who haven't finished isn't a requirement. I was so caught off guard by his kindness after I did finish that I had to run into the bathroom to cry a little before I was able to come back out and break down my station. Though I didn't realize it until you offered it, I really needed your help at that moment, random guy! And I haven't stopped thinking about it all week. Thank you.

  • Family

My beautiful husband and kids, they are my everything. I look at them and think to myself "How did I get this lucky?" I used to dream of having a wonderful husband and a big family and never did I think that I would actually have them. I do, and I am so blessed and thankful everyday that I get to wake up to people that I love with all my heart.

  • My fiance enriches my life, both on land and underwater. On a vacation last year, he pushed me to try something that sounded terrifying -- swimming with stingrays -- and it turned out to be one of the most amazing experiences of my life. Scooter! I am grateful for your love.

He pays for all the expenses out of his pocket without help off donations. Even after the hard road he has traveled beating cancer and the sudden death of my sister Maria..he has managed to stay strong and focus on those around him and the less fortunate.
