  • Bruiser

Car: 1984 Chevy Celebrity Name: Bruiser Why: This Chevy Celebrity had a pretty big transition in 1994 going from my grandpa's Sunday cruiser to my first car. If you can't tell from the picture, it was put through the ringer on more than one occasion thanks mainly to a bad accident caused by a guy who ran a stop sign and then me learning the hard way that front-wheel-drive cars can't do donuts... even on an icy high school parking lot. Each time, though, it took little more than a new body panel here or a few strips of duct tape there to keep it on the road. And yes, the racing stickers made it faster.

Inspired entirely by the TV series, "Firefly," and the movie that followed, "Serenity," this truck earned her name from the derelict (but still flying!) cargo ship by the same name in which the anti-heroes of the show lived and traveled. Captain Malcolm Reynolds (main character) once stated of Serenity, "My ship don't break. If she breaks, you broke her." In the 19 years I've had my truck, she continues to rock and roll, with a bit of rattling along the way as the inner dashboard crumbles like an earthquake when I exceed 75 mph, with no major mishaps. This truck has been a "cargo" truck, and my second home. She continues to drive on through many adventures and misadventures, from leading a parade in the mid-90's in Galveston filled with Ball High School students, to hauling horses, and hauling @ss in the mud and off roads. That tow-ball has kept up a nice deal against anyone who attempted a rear-end accident, and the bed cover is the original, with it has all the swirls of boots from dancing upon it at tailgate parties. (It also can carry a 1500lb round hay bale on top!) The motto behind Firefly and Serenity is that it's a good day as long as they are still flying free. That is true of my own "Serenity" - nothing has stopped us yet!

My current car is the 2009 Ford Focus SE. I love it and its SYNC hands free calling. But, I have had at least five minor collisions with the car so far...it is my Blue Boo Boo! Just months after bringing it home I was rear ended by someone in the carpool lane...someone who didn't even have a Driver's License, just a California ID card. Thank Goodness for Uninsured Motorist Insurance. Then, after moving from Orange County to Riverside County, one morning I wasn't paying attention backing out and bent in the front right end of my car into the garage door wall. No damage to the garage but $1200 worth of damage (estimated at that time in 2010) to the front right corner. BE CAREFUL WHAT YOU WISH FOR! I did not want to have to pay to get my car repaired, not even just the $500 deductible. I prayed that someone would smash into my front right side so their insurance could pay for the damage. Well, after about three months and no more boo-boo's, I finally brought the car in. Didn't want my insurance to go up so I paid to have the car repaired. Not more than a week later after getting a hair cut in a shopping center a friend and I were leaving, driving correctly down the aisle. To my left the sun had begun to set but it was still quite bright. I passed a large white passenger van that was parked and CRASH...a woman, driving INTO THE SUN, crashed right where I had wanted someone to crash into the car. She was speeding ACROSS the aisles, on a diagonal, straight into the sun. The white van blocked her view of me in the aisle, and vice versa. Luckily I took a dozen photos, filed a police report and contacted my insurance company. It was her fault...it was OBVIOUSLY her fault...but she tried to blame me and accuse me of speeding. The insurance company didn't by it. I brought the car back to the repair place and was told "WE BETTER KEEP YOUR PAINT IN STOCK!" (No kidding!) After that incident and after my car was repaired I would again get a couple of boo-boo's; a car slamming on it's brakes with me behind causing me to squeal and burn rubber. Only my license plate frame bolt indented her car. In the back seat a young boy was eating pizza. I asked "ARE YOU OK?" and he said "I didn't feel a thing" - the mother and daughter immediately called the police. Again, the only damage was an indentation of my license plate frame bolt on the back of her bumper. This was just a few weeks after someone kissed my bumper causing a scratch. The insurance company said they would repair it and I said "No real damage - nothing a bumper sticker couldn't hide" but the woman with the two kids...she is not getting her car painted. She is getting a lawyer. We both have the same insurance company. Again, I took over a dozen photos, but no witness this time. Yes, it was my fault but this woman wouldn't settle for just a paint job, she wanted PAIN AND SUFFERING. She said they didn't need an ambulance and the police didn't show up. We had the same insurance company. Months later I kept calling to find out what was happening..."she lawyer-ed up" I was told. Finally, OUR insurance company CLOSED THE CLAIM. However, just in case someone shows up to my door with a summons...the insurance company mailed me an envelope to mail it to them as it was the insurance company this woman was after - my insurance money. I understand she has up to two years to file or sue. Again, the only damage was an octagon shape indentation on her bumper. My blue boo boo didn't have a scratch...this time. So, let this be a lesson....BE CAREFUL WHAT YOU WISH FOR! Wishes do come true...sometimes after-the-fact!

I told my children when I passed dragonflies would be me visiting them) and the cherry blossom (meaning life is brief but beautiful)

We now also have 3 other tattoos, the Chinese symbol of family, faith and friendship, that are the same. Even before we met, we had 2 tattoos that were the same. So we were destined to be Best friends...

  • Infinity

The weekend after I graduated college, I had a deceivingly thick stack of cash, high hopes for an infinite summer, and an overwhelming sense of anxiety about the future that I found ways to temporarily subdue. And once my parents went back home all proud of me, I commemorated all that with one friend at a tattoo parlor in the East Village where I had a nice man ink a Line symbol into my right arm. Infinity! To remind me that the little things really are so small. My mom doesn't get it.

  • My grandparents have always been adventurous kids at heart. They went all over the world -- and they'd be happy to know I'm trying to do the same.

  • Wisdom from pop pop

My grandpa can't remember much these days, but when I got engaged, I asked him for advice. He suddenly came alive and told me passionately that marriage means "loving someone more than you love yourself." It was a special moment of clarity that I will never forget.

It's a day before my graduation when we took a trip to Niagara Falls about a month before she passed away. Even though she was pretty sick and not as strong as she was before, she came along and made her way to the falls since it had always been her dream. She taught me the importance of patience and strength and the importance of pursing my dreams.

I thought nothing of it until he looked over at me, with this look. I didn't understand why I got "the look." Until he replied "you should never use the word hate, it is a very strong word, it's too strong of a word for a lady like you to use." At the time I rolled my eyes and walked away. However, a few years later I sat and thought of those words, and remember thinking how right he was. Hate is a horrible word. And rarely do you actually really HATE something. You more than likely just strongly dislike it. So, from that point on, I only use the phrase "I strongly dislike (whatever it may be)."
